Man dies after dumpling-eating contest

Kiev - A Ukrainian man died on Tuesday shortly after winning a dumpling-eating contest, the Interfax news agency reported.

The victim was described in the report as a retiree aged 77 living in the village of Tokmak, in Ukraine's eastern Zaporizhia region.

He became ill within minutes of taking first prize in a contest on consuming varenniki, a steamed dumpling considered one of Ukraine's most traditional foods.

Contest organisers were unable to revive him after he lost consciousness. It was unclear how many dumplings the man ate.

An autopsy was planned to determine the cause of his death.

Ukrainian varenniki typically are stuffed with cabbage, potatoes, mushrooms or cherries.

Most Ukrainian families eat varenniki only during holidays as much time is needed to prepare the dumplings, and because they are considered very filling.

Yep, here's another Darwin Awards winner.. but as he was 77 at his death, he waited far too long to remove himself from the genepool to improve the human genome.. So, what was his contribution actually??

If it's unclear how many he ate how do they know he won?

Well-put, Will. Sounds like everyone including the witnesses, police and reporters had their share of dumb-ling, hey?

An autopsy was planned to determine the cause of his death - This sounds exactly like the idiots in this country.

What a fool. If you win a dumpling eating contest you have to immidiately enter a dumping evacuation and farting contest to ballance things out.

Bwaahaahaa! served the greedy piggy right then..

Poorly written article, doesn't explain how he died, he ate and died. Wow

I cannot understand why there are competitions for gluttony. Anyone participating, get what they deserve. I guess it's all part of being named as a "world" record holder for some meaningless feat that proves nothing more than just how stupid mankind is.

Agreed! I only recently mentioned this to a colleague of mine, when noting the News24 article on the woman who broke the world record for eating chicken wings. Gluttony, greed, obesity - these are not things to celebrate or commend.

Pity 'fat boy' MALEMA was not a contestant... The Ukranian man would have survived...
