Sydney - A court in Australia on Friday sentenced a man who took a 12-year-old as his bride and made her pregnant to seven and a half years in prison, media reports said.

The man, identified in media reports only as a 27-year-old student from Lebanon, was earlier convicted on one count of persistent sexual abuse of a child.

Broadcaster SBS said the judge in the Sydney court said the man had persisted in pursuing the girl despite her initial reluctance.

He was arrested in February 2014 when he tried to enrol the girl at a school, weeks after they were married in an Islamic ceremony at the home of her father.

The girl, who had turned 13, was then reportedly treated for a miscarriage due to an ectopic pregnancy.

A cleric was charged in November with conducting an unauthorized marriage. The ceremony was performed at the home of her father.

The father told Sydney's Daily Telegraph that under his interpretation of the Koran the only way the pair could be in the same room un-chaperoned was if they were married.
