Man unrepentant after beheading daughter

Jaipur - A father in northwestern India remained unrepentant after beheading his daughter with a ceremonial sword in a rage over her relationships with men, police said.

The man surrendered at a police station, carrying the head in one hand and the bloodied sword in the other, police said on Tuesday. Oghad Singh, aged 46, was charged with murder.

Residents of Dungarji village expressed shock as they performed the last rites for the 20-year-old woman, who was killed on Monday.

Police said Singh, a marble miner, accused his daughter of bringing dishonor to the family and making it hard to find husbands for her two unmarried sisters.

Women wailing in grief lined the dusty road of the village in Rajasthan state as a procession carried Manju Kanwar's remains to her funeral pyre. As in many north and west Indian villages, the women, including her mother and four sisters, were not allowed to attend the funeral.

Rapidly modernising India faces increasing social clashes as youths resist traditions like arranged marriage or limits on women venturing outside their parents' or husbands' homes, especially in conservative rural areas.

Head stitched back on

Some of these conflicts have led to women or young couples being lynched by village kangaroo courts. But such a brutal punishment by a father is relatively rare in a country of 1.2 billion people.

Dungarji residents condemned Singh's actions as extreme. They said that Singh, his shirt soaked in blood, had carried his daughter's head through the village, describing what he'd done to neighbours.

A coroner stitched Kanwar's head onto her body for the funeral. About 100 men, many of them relatives wearing ceremonial Rajput warrior clan turbans, surrounded her muslin-wrapped body, and her brother lit the funeral pyre.

"He told me that he took the sword out, and when the daughter was all alone in the house he beheaded her with a single stroke and the head fell on the ground," said Narayan Singh, a distant relative.

He said he persuaded Singh to surrender, and took him by motorcycle to a police station 5km away.

"It was a ghastly sight," officer Ranjit Singh said, describing the father sitting in the station's waiting room holding the head in one hand and the sword in the other. "Oghad admitted immediately that he killed his daughter because she had earned a bad name for the family."

Harsh place for women

Police described Kanwar's recent life as difficult and unorthodox for the traditional community of about 1 000 just outside the Rajasthani tourist town of Udaipur.

She left her husband from an arranged marriage two years ago and moved back home to live with her parents. She recently began seeing several men which "disgusted" her father, deputy police superintendent Umesh Ojha said.

"Oghad said he was fed up with the lifestyle of his daughter," Ojha said.

When Manju eloped with one man two weeks ago, her father forced her to return on Sunday and killed her.

India is considered one of the harshest places in the world for women, with female infanticide and child marriage still common.

The UN's gender inequality index places India second to last, above Saudi Arabia, based on labour, reproductive health, education and politics. The index does not consider issues of violence.

It really is about time that people realise it it not still the middle ages. A woman is not an object something you own, and trade at will. What a savage act.

Boo Please note: they are HINDUS! Not MUSLIM!! Muslims bury not burn. This is the same culture that forced wives to burn along side there dead husband. You can't blame everything on Islam.

Clearly you have a vendetta against Islam. I will not stand in your way. You are a misguided soul. If you read properly and understand the teaching properly you would understand that Islam, Hinduism, Judaism, Christianity all follow the same principals. And yes it is People that misintepret religion to do these savage acts

Boos, in arabia people buried their female children alive until the noble Prophet Mohammed put a stop to it. Read your history.

@Jerolan: It's a bit lame to thumbs-up your own posts.. Just saying...

  • Boos - 2012-06-20 15:35

@tasneem.basardien: ... and also ? Who said he was brain-washed ? And if so, by whom ? This was clearly a religious killing right ? At least, that is what it looks like to me.. and it is the way of Islam right ? To be-head? 'Honor-killing' ?? Ring any bells ? Or are you reading some other Koran ? Maybe one with all the peace and love in it and all the 'kill the infidel' stuff removed. And don't forget the Hadith ... boy what a read ...

      jerolan.gengiah - 2012-06-20 15:37

Have you not read the article and comments previously. This man is not Islam His name is Singh. Not an Islamic name. Most probably Hindu

      Boos - 2012-06-20 15:55

@Jerolan: Mmm.... At least you've stopped with the insults.. good sign. But to the point, yes it could be that he's not Muslim but if you read my first comment, I also did not say he was Muslim.. I said, '..This is the way of Islam... get used to it.' The point was that Islam is growing rapidly and 'taking over', so this kind of thing will become more prevalent, since one of Islam's aims are to implement Sharia law, which, in turn causes this kind of horror. And, to your other observation about me having a vendetta against Islam: I resist forces that tries to enslave, I fight against such forces(metaphorically) and I try to reveal what they truly are. Currently, evidence that Islam is evil cloaked and sugar coated (and copied from) Bible principles, is overwhelming. I don't know what your (and Gemmy's) religion is, but by the way you guys immediately responded with verbal abuse, I can only guess it's that 'religion of peace and tolerance' ... Sorry, actions speaks louder than words.

      jason.mcdonahugh - 2012-06-20 16:13

@boos you get extremists in all religions, you cant hate a religion for the actions of a few.

      jerolan.gengiah - 2012-06-20 16:25

Our outburst where a result of your attack against a religion that is not even relevant to this article. It is clear that you are a troll probably just splashing articles with your hatred of Islam. Or possibly you genuinely thought he was Islam and now are trying to cover up your tracks. Whichever the case your actions are uncalled for an unfair. Your intepretation of Sharia Law is not as reality. May be the case for the extremists but not the whole. Your actions and outbursts here and your clear outburst should be likened to that of an extremist carrying out these acts. Use another forum to further your agenda. Write an article. Do not become a troll like so many others

      Boos - 2012-06-20 16:42

@jason.mcdonahugh: True words. But Islam has a obvious track record, and by the way, I don't hate... I know what Islam is and I reject it and would warn everyone to be wary of it's true nature.

      henry.bosman.5 - 2012-06-20 16:51

Keep your head held high Boos. I used to think like you.Eventually i got tired of muslims telling me to read the koran as i was ignorant of most of it. So i read it in english. What i used to think turned out to be much much worse. Now i'm always told "it's taken out of context ....blah blah blah" I emplore all civilised people to read it,you will never stand with your back to a muslim again, lest a knife plunges into your back.

      Boos - 2012-06-20 19:23

@henry.bosman.5: What you say is so true brother. According to Mohammad himself, lying and treachery are tools to be used to further Islam. I do have Muslim friends which are good people. I can only hope and pray that they one day see the truth. As for Muslims in general.. 'good' Muslims are those living in societies as minorities. Then they preach peace and tolerance (just like Mohammad in the beginning when he was living in Mecca ). But gradually, as numbers grow, they become more intolerant and eventually militant and extremist. This is a proven observation. Islam is a system, not a religion. It has a religious component (Islam religion/koran), a law component (sharia), and a general living component/way of life (hadith - emulating Mohammed).. It takes over you entire existence, the way you live, eat, dress, think. Makes killing non-muslims a duty, killing your children (child sacrifice) honorable, approves of lying/deceit, suicide honorable etc.... quite like a certain evil dude mentioned in the Bible, wouldn't you say?
