Tijuana - Mexican soldiers found a drug tunnel on the US border containing several tons of marijuana, near another tunnel from which they seized a record drug haul this month, a military source said Friday.

Soldiers found the entrance to the tunnel, which was nearly 1km long, late on Thursday in a house in the border city of Tijuana, across from San Diego in the United States, a military official said, declining to be named.

"Several tons of marijuana" were inside the tunnel, which passed under a business and a road leading to the border, he said.

On November 4, US and Mexican police seized a record drug haul of over 30 tons of marijuana smuggled through a third-of-a-mile long tunnel less than two streets away.

Authorities have this year unearthed around a dozen tunnels used for drug and immigrant smuggling in the area around the busiest crossing on the US-Mexico border.
