Mexico City - Mexican authorities are investigating whether an obscure anarchist group was behind the simultaneous explosions of homemade bombs in four buses last weekend, prosecutors said on Monday.

The explosive devices, made with liquid soap, fuel and a clock, detonated around 01:30 on Saturday inside the buses in Ecatepec, a suburb of Mexico City, said the chief prosecutor of the State of Mexico, Alejandro Gomez.

Five other devices were found in other units but did not blow up. Only one driver was slightly hurt trying to put out a fire, Gomez told Radio Formula.

Authorities suspect a small anarchist group named the Secta Pagana de la Montana (Pagan Sect of the Mountain) was behind the attacks.

The explosives were placed in the back of the buses and they detonated when there were no passengers, Gomez said.

"It's clear that they did not aim to hurt people, but to get attention," he said.

Anarchist groups have been known to place explosives in bank ATM machines, but not buses, Gomez said.

The federal attorney general's office said it had opened its own investigation into the bombings.
