Michelle Obama loves McDonald's menu

Washington - US fast-food giant McDonald's unveiled a revamped menu on Tuesday in a move to offer healthier options and join the fight against obesity, drawing praise from First Lady Michelle Obama.

The chain will add a serving of fruit or vegetable to its "Happy Meals," which are aimed at children, and shrink the portion of French fries.

The new French fry holders will contain 31g of potatoes, down from over 60g. The meals also will include apple slices, carrots, raisins, pineapple slices or other fresh produce. The change will cut calories by an average of 20%.

The move comes amid pressure from health advocacy groups to get the fast-food industry, blamed for much of the obesity epidemic, to offer more healthy choices.

"McDonald's is making continued progress today by providing more fruit and reducing the calories in its Happy Meals," the first lady said in a statement.

"I've always said that everyone has a role to play in making America healthier, and these are positive steps toward the goal of solving the problem of childhood obesity. McDonald's has continued to evolve its menu, and I look forward to hearing about the progress of today's commitments, as well as efforts in the years to come."

McDonald's will begin rolling out the new Happy Meal in September, with the goal of having them available in all 14 000 restaurants in early 2012.

The new Happy Meal will also include the choice of a hamburger, cheeseburger or Chicken McNuggets, and options for low-fat milk.

Typical of giant corpoatioins, a couple of apple sticks will not improve your childs health if Mc donalds is in any way part of their diet. The key is to eliminate these false/fast food Businesses. They are a burden on society, there is nothing nutritional in a McDs burger or chips, they are full of processed tortured animals and the little bit of veggies that are available on the menu are Gm. What a pitiful display of mans intelligence. Sorry to say, if you have eaten McDs recently, you are a moron. I cringe when i see people walking down the street with those brown paper bags, how can any intelligent human consider that a meal?!

Well GM foods are the same as cross-breeding beans / peas by grafting 1 type of plant onto another type. Its not like they took a laser and spliced DNA, making it mutated and radioactive. GM vegetables are perfectly safe, and in no way detrimental to the health and well being and anyone who consumed them. But yes, I agree, there's practically no nutritional value in the McFats fast foods. (I tend to like KFC's mash & gravy, and coleslaw, so I'll give them a pass on barely any nutritional value)

Taurusaurus- sorry didnt realise we have a monsanto rep online... there are two sides to the coin of the GM debate, and although I am keen to listen to both sides, you have a very idealisitic idea of what GM is. What about anti-freeze DNA from arctic fish in your tomatoes? Feel free to enjoy your KFC, knowing that you are supporting an industry that abuses and tortures thousands of animals each day so you can get you happy hormones in the form of deepfried deformed chicken. I think thousands of disillusioned farmers from around the world will beg to differ with your statement, especially now that their farmlands have been destroyed with GM crops. GM is unsustainable, unnecessary and is fuelling the immense poverty that many farmers experience. They are so in debt not even their grandchildren will be able to pay it off. You may benefit from researching the 25000-30000 suicide cases every year among Indian farmers.. yes GM is perfectly safe- to the environment, its people and its consumers....thanks for the laugh though!
