Muslims angry at alleged vodka blasphemy

2012-04-04 14:06

Almaty - Muslims in the Central Asian nation of Kazakhstan are up in arms at a vodka producer for including the word "Allah" on its liquor bottles.

Privately owned Channel 31 cited Bekzat Boranbaiuly, head imam at a mosque in the city of Semey, as saying the vodka maker should seek forgiveness for the blasphemous use of the sentence "The Power of Allah Suffices for All".

Islam strictly forbids drinking alcohol.

Channel 31 said in its report on Tuesday evening the vodka brand is available in most shops in the northern Kazakhstan city of Semey at an average price of $4.40.

Ethnic Kazakhs are mainly Sunni Muslim, but religious attitudes are generally fairly relaxed. The country has a large Slavic minority and the consumption of alcohol is popular across the board.

Why in his right mind will one man belittle another's believe by specifically using a name, that is dear to those, to boost a product that the religion, associated with the name, is against?

      Theo - 2012-04-04 15:19

so what about hot cross buns

      J-Man - 2012-04-04 17:06

Because all the religious people do it...i.e. belittling 'things/beliefs/etc' that are important to others. My god is better than your god BS.

      Christelle - 2012-04-04 19:28

Du Toit, I totally agree with you. We have turned into a human race of utter disrespect - intollerance for others beliefs - whether it may be religion, politics, greenpeace or whatever. We can certainly disagree, but do so in a respectful manner - and religion is something people hold dear - so we have to be so much more sensitive to it!

for an islamic country i have never before seen so many PORK products available in ALL the shops.... yee gawds, i was expecting to find pork flavored wrigleys chewing gum in kazakhstan... p.s. i worked in atyrau for 2 years.... as far as vodka goes, i have never in my life seen anyone toast anything as much as the kazakhs do with neat shots of BODKA (the correct spelling if using the cyrillic alphabet).... health, wealth, prosperity, life, your mother, your brother, your sister, your uncle, your new car, your old job.... on a personal note, i would rather complain about something like the nose picking and spitting in public places!!!

  • Anwar - 2012-04-04 17:14

Through out history there weer people who ridiculed religion and its beliefs whether it be muslims, christian , hindus, jews etc etc It will continue till the end of time, My personal viewpoint is that they can carry on doing as they please, their action donot decrease or degrade my belief in the GOD, if anything it only makes it stronger as I can see the evil hand at work trying belittle our beliefs. As believer in GOD, GOD is the judge and jury. These type of stunts are merely there to create tenstion and create a reaction, in most case outrage and disgust which leads to hatred, and that is exaclty the opposite of How GOD wants us to live our lives. Let them be in their slandering, GOD is just and he will judge their actions. Let us concentrate on uniting mankind and bringing peace to the world. Its incidents like these that lead up to horrific violent acts of terrorism and killing. Spread love not hate.. The messengers of GOD were ridiculed throughout their lives for the message they carriedd yet they never gave in to all the salnder and hate. Let them be, lets focus our energies where we need it most, bringing peace to the world.

      Anwar - 2012-04-04 17:54

Andvancement in weapons, which is done through scientific studies have created more violent weapons enabling the murders and eradication of huge masses of people yet you hold religion responsible for the attrocities in the world, science has its benefits and all the focus should be in this direction instead of creating weapons that are used to destroy the earth and its inhabitants, Science as an institution just like religion , if placed in the hands of irresponsible human beings will wreak havoc.. If you can blame GOD ,religion and its followers, then science and its students can be held equally accountable for the pain and suffering in the world. There are good and both within both institutions, even if by some unforeseen circumstance the world was free of religion, you would still be facing the same problems we have today.. famine, poverty, war and all that. Presently it seems that religion and science are competing for the top spot, but man is competitive by nature so even if religion were wiped off the planet.. Scientists will compete against each other and at the rate we going.. the weapons of destruction will just get more powerful until the human race destroys itself. You are quick to show up the bad side of the people of faith yet you ignore the horrors of science like biochemical warfare, diseases, all introduced through scientific experimen

      Jason - 2012-04-04 18:00

Anwar - Please, the last thing we need is happy clappers trying to unite something. Just carry on going to your church, worship at whatever alter you choose but please leave the uniting to ppl with brains.

      Anwar - 2012-04-04 19:15

Thank you for you kind words Mr King.. every human on the planet has a brain or did science not teach you that? But just to clarify your point.. we leave the peacemaking to people of intelligence.. Clap Clap

  • Buti - 2012-04-04 18:44

Why should they use the word of God in promoting alcohol. This shows that most people lost respect in fearing God.

      Tanie - 2012-04-04 19:00
