Berlin - The US National Security Agency (NSA) monitored phone calls from 35 international leaders, Britain's Guardian newspaper reported on Thursday, citing a classified document provided by whistleblower Edward Snowden.

None of the 35 leaders were named in the document, but the Guardian said their numbers were provided to the NSA by an unnamed US official after the intelligence agency sent out requests for other US government departments to reveal such information about top politicians abroad so the NSA could add their phone numbers to its surveillance systems.

The report was published a day after allegations that the NSA monitored German Chancellor Angela Merkel's mobile phone.

The 2006 memo provided by Snowden said the eavesdropping had provided "little reportable intelligence".
