Informant: Cops paid me to bait Muslims

2012-10-23 22:42

New York - A paid informant for the New York Police Department says he was under orders to "bait" Muslims into saying bad things.

The US citizen of Bengali descent says he lived a double life, snapping pictures inside mosques and collecting the names of innocent people attending Islamic study groups.

Shamiur Rahman, 19, tells The Associated Press that he regrets his work, which paid up to $1 000 a month. He says he spied on student groups and mosques. He showed the AP weeks of text messages and photographs with his NYPD contacts.

NYPD spokesperson Paul Browne didn't immediately return a request for comment. Browne has denied widespread police monitoring of mosques and student groups, saying the NYPD only follows leads.

Rahman, however, says he spied on "everything and anyone".

That is how intelligence is gathered, they were being proactive not waiting for another attack.

      ari.potah - 2012-10-24 08:21

You still have your head up your arse. What attack by Muslims?? 9/11??? This has been so discounted that only "true believers" still believe the official line. What this is amounts to deliberate fabrication of "evidence" that is soooo badly needed to continue the demonisation of "the other".

      shaunpatrickdaly - 2012-10-24 09:24

@ari: "so discounted"? By whom? A bunch of bloggers and college kids with a copy of Final Cut Pro and too much time on their hands? I've yet to see any theory put forth that hasn't been thoroughly discounted by experts with far more impressive credentials than those who put forth the theory in the first place. The more you think about theses theories, the more you realize how much they depend on circumstantial evidence, facts without analysis or documentation, quotes taken out of context and the scattered testimony of traumatized eyewitnesses. Unfortunately you can't tell that to the conspiracy fans, they're convinced that a major event needs an equally major cause because without one the worlds way too scary a place.

      allcoveredinNinjas - 2012-10-24 13:59

Shaun you on the money, haven't heard what the cops side is. 9/11 truther will 'connect the dots' ,dispite the gaping holes in their theory or the mental gymnastics that requires you to believe that twaddle .

  • Abdulcarrim Essa - 2012-10-24 00:09

proactive is one thing , framing someone is another all together. such a shame that the so called intellectuals cant think for themselve when it comes to media bias.

      osiris.fox - 2012-10-24 03:46

How is it framing? Maybe ethically dubious, but framing, no. How do you think cops bust drug dealers and so on? They bait them. Fact is, the guy was willing to detonate a bomb and is thus dangerous. Any rational person wouldn't have even entertained the idea if approached about it. Clearly he did.

  • peter.mokoena.31 - 2012-10-24 04:39

It is sickening that they would spy on people based on their religion, and yet they can't spy on their own phsycopaths who normally shoot at their very own. Pathethic

      shaunpatrickdaly - 2012-10-24 09:15

Who exactly are "they" and "theirs"? The article is about the American government surveilling American citizens and Immigrants, so unless there are other unmentioned parties, I'm not entirely sure what you're getting at.

      drew.carsen - 2012-10-24 10:16

Okay Shaun Daly, so either you are unaware of the world outside of your bubble or you have difficulty understanding English. The article clearly outlines 1 group: "Islamic study groups" and "mosques" - I travel all the time and I have yet to find a Mosque that hosts Shabbat lol or an Islamic study group that discusses the Tanach.

      drew.carsen - 2012-10-24 10:19

      shaunpatrickdaly - 2012-10-24 11:17

So "they" and "theirs" are Jews? A country that's never had a Jewish president and is overwhelmingly Christian is somehow Jewish? I'm sorry if I'm not getting it, I guess I can't make the necessary jumps in logic and reasoning to follow your example.

      drew.carsen - 2012-10-24 11:30

"They" and "their" refers to the NYPD - English is not your first language is it @Shaun Daly

      shaunpatrickdaly - 2012-10-24 11:39

Oh okay, now its cops. So Peters original statement should be read as "and yet the nypd can't spy on they nypds own psychopaths who normally shoot at the nypd". Funny, in the 24 years I spent living in New York, I can't remember one case of blue on blue violence like that. Maybe I should email my uncle the nypd detectives lieutenant or either of his sons, a sergeant and patrolmen, see if they could enlighten me.

      drew.carsen - 2012-10-24 11:50

ha ha ha Shaun you are a total oxyMoron. Peter's statement makes perfect sense to anyone who can read and understand english.

      drew.carsen - 2012-10-24 11:58

ha ha ha Shaun you are a total oxyMoron. For the sake the rest of the world perhaps don't do any research until you have learnt to grasp the English language first. I suggest you focus on meaning and interpretation.

we have Entrapment laws in the US, i would like to see how the District Attorney is going to get past this one

  • ft.burhaak - 2012-10-24 06:01

There was a kingfish and sole swimming..They saw the bait in the water,Kingfish went for it but saw the hook and left it.But the sole was like the informant,it took the bait and got hooked. So the sole pasd the kingie while being reeled in,and kingie said 'ahh sole'!

  • louis.nolte.3 - 2012-10-24 06:57

I would spy on them too if I had been been attacked in the way the US were. With the amount of violence associated with so many Muslim countries, this really comes as no surprise. Its got nothing to do with their religion, its about a large group of Muslims' behaviour. Not all Muslims are the same, but pretty difficult to tell if civilians are capable of becoming suicide bombers.

  • dadasuraj - 2012-10-24 07:38

Allah will continue to guide Islam. Shame on America.

  • jcoetzee1975 - 2012-10-24 07:42

Nothing wrong with having an inside man. Get over it.

  • drew.carsen - 2012-10-24 08:30

That in itself is a human rights violation. 9/11 was an inside job. The American government killing their own people to create a panic in order to push their WAR agenda's and further invade human rights. How many wars have America not started since 9/11 looking for weapons of mass destruction which is in their own back yard. America aims to intimidate & even annialate any country with nuclear capabilities and oil resources to ensure they remain in control of the world. People think terrorists are Muslim thanks to the CIA created Boogie man Osama bin laden, wake up! The real terrorists are the global capitalist governments which only allows the rich to get richer and the poor to suffer. As South Africans, our biggest concern should be of the American government who has of recent years begun to show lots of interest in our country (or rather our resources). Every country they have claimed to "help" ends up in destroyed. If America wants to take over RSA tomorrow they can, all they can do is flood the media with a fake report that so called Taliban members are here and voila! WAR! Wake up people! America's politics is as fake as Hollywood. It's as simple as this. You stand in their way then they call you a terrorist and spew some fake ties to Taliban and the public just eats it up and nobody bothers to check the facts. What I am saying is factual. STop being SHEEP & go do your own research and you might get a clue yourself.

      shaunpatrickdaly - 2012-10-24 09:37

Anyone who has gone and done their own research and who does so with an open mind instead of looking for proof to back up whatever preconceived notion they go in with will find the same thing: There's a big problem with these conspiracy theories. The more you think about them, the more you realize how much they depend on circumstantial evidence, facts without analysis or documentation, quotes taken out of context and the scattered testimony of traumatized eyewitnesses. The theories prompt small, reasonable questions that demand answers that are just too large and unreasonable to swallow. Granted, the Pentagon crash site looks odd in photographs. But if the Pentagon was hit by a cruise missile, then what happened to American Airlines Flight 77? Where did all the real, documented people on it go? Assassinated? Relocated? What about eyewitnesses who saw a plane, not a missile? And what are the chances that an operation of such size,it would surely have involved hundreds of military and civilian personnel, could be carried out without a single leak? Without leaving behind a single piece of evidence hard enough to stand up to scrutiny in a court? Please.

      drew.carsen - 2012-10-24 10:35

Shaun, do yourself a favour and research the Guantanimo Bay detention camp and ask yourself if a government who violates human rights in this way can be trusted. This guy who spied on people admitted to submitting names of innocent people. Now imagine yourself even, cracking a bad joke to a friend about shooting your boss and "Mr Spy" reports back to NYPD something he overheard out of context and then you get arrested as a "suspected terrorist" have all you rights stripped away. So dont act all righteous and accuse people of running around with conspiracy theories. There are lots of factual evidence of the American governments violations and the incompetance of the Bush administration.

      shaunpatrickdaly - 2012-10-24 11:29

But Bush hasn't been in office for 4 years and Guantanamo Bay is in Cuba, the NYPD wouldn't be in a position to send anyone to a federal facility like that. There's also pretty rigorous standards as to who is and who isn't sent to GB, so unless I the aforementioned bomb jokes were made at my job in an Al Qaeda safe house or while shooting at civilians on American soil, I think I'd find myself in a regular state or federal institution. For someone who talks about other people being sheep, in your weak efforts to rail against the evil that is the US, you do quite a bit of aimless wandering and regurgitation yourself bud.

      drew.carsen - 2012-10-24 11:43

Shaun once again you are missing the point. Do the research in your first language and just maybe you will come to understand the bottom line. Thank God we have a consitution that protects our human rights. Peace out!

      allcoveredinNinjas - 2012-10-24 13:43

Where are these facts? There are none, its all questions surrounded by theory in a world where emotion seems to be more influencial than facts . Talk about fear based rhetoric, SA must worry about the US .... I mean look what they did in Japan , Germany , Korea , Kosovo . In a theory in which it would take thousands , if not hundreds of thousands of people to action and maintain secrecy , not one has come out yet the president can't get a blow job from a intern without it coming out . If there was a conspiracy of domination then why didn't they just plant a WMD , if they can organise the greatest inside job ever then that would seem fairly easy.

  • issa.kabudula - 2012-10-24 08:55

Rahman - you have done very bad work, in Islam spying is prohibited and it is taken a 3rd degree sin, due to its implication where innocent people are arrested, killed and tortured due to lies of spying, there is no truth in spying.
