Bangkok - New Zealand's security services have been spying on the email, phone and social media communications of the country's Pacific neighbours, reports said on Thursday.

The revelation, based on documents leaked by US whistleblower Edward Snowden, describes how New Zealand's Government Communications Security Bureau has gathered comprehensive digital records on nearly two dozen countries, the New Zealand Herald reported.

The information on countries - including Tuvalu, Nauru, Kiribati, Samoa, Vanuatu, the Solomon Islands - was being provided to the US National Security Agency, the report said.

New Zealand Prime Minister John Key said on Wednesday that he could "guarantee" the allegations were false.

The documents reveal more about New Zealand's role in the so-called Five Eyes network that includes agencies from New Zealand, the United States, the United Kingdom, Canada and Australia, The Intercept website said.
