New al-Qaeda leader named - reports

Dubai - Al-Qaeda has chosen a former Egyptian special forces officer as interim leader of the violent extremist group following the death this month of Osama bin Laden, CNN and Al Jazeera reported on Tuesday.

Saif al-Adel, a top al-Qaeda strategist and senior military leader, has been tapped as "caretaker" chief of the group, CNN reported, citing former Libyan militant Noman Benotman, who has renounced al-Qaeda's ideology.

The pan-Arab satellite channel Al Jazeera issued a similar report that quoted a Pakistani security official as saying Adel was appointed during a meeting of between "six and eight al-Qaeda leaders."

Mohammed Mustafa al-Yamani was also chosen as the network's commander.

Pakistan's The News newspaper had also corroborated the report, citing unnamed sources in an article datelined Rawalpindi, a city home to the military headquarters of the Pakistani Armed Forces, near the capital Islamabad.

The decision to choose Adel, also known as Muhamad Ibrahim Makkawi, came as militants grew increasingly restive over the lack of a formal successor to bin Laden, who was killed in a dramatic US commando raid deep in Pakistan on May 2, Benotman told CNN.

Adel took refuge in Iran after the US invasion of Afghanistan, according to a Al Jazeera report.

The 50-year-old militant was allegedly involved in attacks that targeted US embassies in Nairobi and Dar al-Salam in 1998.

Bin Laden's long-time deputy Ayman al-Zawahiri, another Egyptian, is considered to be his presumed successor.

Benotman said the appointment of Adel on a temporary basis may be a way for the group to gauge reaction to having someone outside the Muslim holy region of the Arabian Peninsula at the helm.

Is that the feint sound of a drone? This is likely to be a short tenure, for him and his successor. Al-Quaida and the Taliban are going down at a rapid rate.

      Hannah - 2011-05-20 10:10

Oh lets hope so as so many of their woman and children are suffering at an alarming rate that it is inhumane to allow al-quaida and the taliban to continue in their political ideologies any longer.. please USA take this one out quickly..

  • JusticeMan - 2011-05-18 17:40

slg you are so obsessed with Al-qaeda, bet you not at all interested in the elections?? Is this your prejuidices shining through??

      Valis - 2011-05-18 17:44

      He's just bloodthirsty.

      slg - 2011-05-19 05:06

Valis, Al-Quaida and the Taliban have chosen to die. Have you not heard them choose to martyr themselves? Within this choice is the killing or maiming of innocent civilians who might be where they choose to die. That could be you and your loved ones. They are the blood-thirsty ones. We have a responsibility to protect ourselves from their twisted choice, and protect innocent civilians from being maimed or dying.

      G-spotWizard - 2011-05-20 09:47

One bloodthirsty animal Saif al-Adel replacing another. I whish he is taken out asap. I am sure the SEALS will do it again. Go for him, we (those who love peace and freedom) are all behind you.

      Hannah - 2011-05-20 10:14

      slg - 2011-05-23 02:48

And thankfully they are Hannah. I couldn't agree with you more. The new generation a on the march, at last. It's thrilling.

The Yanks are doing fantastically well in their self=made lob of 'protecting' the world. First they put OBL on the map by supplying and training him when he was in Afghanistan to fight the Soviets. Now they were responsible for training his successor. Their ability to choose who to back and train is fantastic!!

      Francis - 2011-05-18 18:25

Sort of irony isn't it. Like teaching a dog to bite his handler

      slg - 2011-05-19 04:49

The US is protecting itself. It is not protecting the world, but this is a valuable byproduct for the rest of us. They did not "put Bin Laden on the map". Bin Laden and the Taliban were already in existence when the US formed a short-term alliance with them to counter the very real threat the Soviet Union posed to humanity. That was in the 1980's, a long time ago. Bin Laden then made the wrong choice to declare war on the US and freer world, which resulted in his death a few weeks ago. Bin Laden made this choice. How is the US responsible for training Bin Laden's successor?

      JusticeMan - 2011-05-18 18:27

You are a Fool my compatriot, Why do you support these ruthless US Govt's. The US people & soldiers are being fooled just like us. Thousands of Soldiers of theres died for a War that has no Merit. Bush was Quoted when asked a few years ago about OBL. "I don't know, i don't spend much time on him" You got to be kidding Bush. Did you wonder how a Stupid Man Like G Bush became president of the US, this defies Logic!

      slg - 2011-05-19 04:50

I agree with you PMG except your bigoted label of Muslim people. I don't like that at all.

      slg - 2011-05-19 04:55

Justice, the US people and soldiers are not being fooled. But I understand that you feel fooled, and I see where this is coming from. You're fooling yourself by believing and supporting Al-Quaida and the Taliban, of all people. The Taliban and Al-Qauida have the kind of control over their people that you describe. You're trying to send yourself the message that you're being fooled into an allegiance with the ruthless Taliban and Al-Quaida. You've just inverted the message. Turn the picture around.

  • JusticeMan - 2011-05-18 18:21

News 24 why are you using CNN as a trustworthy source?? News24 you must be unbiased & be objective, there are just too many unanswered questions from your readers regarding the alleged death of OBL??

      slg - 2011-05-19 04:57

The alleged death of Bin Laden? You can't be serious. Really? I mean, really?!

      Risen Ape - 2011-05-19 08:19

JusticeMan, you are completely brainwashed. Is this the nonsense your Imams teach you? Even OBL's wives know he is dead but here your are denying reality. What makeer jou man?

      Barry M - 2011-05-19 12:36

Are you being stupid or just plain obtuse?

      G-spotWizard - 2011-05-20 09:53

JusticeMan, you can answer to those unanswered questions anyway you want but the reality is Osama Bin Laden is DEAD, DECEASED, MORT, KAPUT. By the way I had a dream last night, i saw 72 sharks feating on a beareded corpse, eish i quit eating fish.

  • Olavin - 2011-05-18 18:32

They know all this information about their opposition already? It took them weeks to find out about the rebels in Libya who they worked side-by-side with.

  • Zakhele - 2011-05-18 19:23

Why was I not considered for this important post? Why was my name thrown in there for consideration? Are my efforts undervalued by the Al-Qaeda frontiers?

      Julius - 2011-05-18 20:01

OK you are 2nd leader.... can you hear the sound of rotor blades yet

  • Grunk - 2011-05-19 11:01

To all my dear hopeful blind followers of the US version of truth, justice and peace for all and particularly for those who have confidence in their ability to defend us all. Who created these fanatics? When the US invaded Afghanistan (instead of waiting a bit and sorting matters out with a cruise missile or two at a reduced cost of about 50000 lives) any sane person/government would realise that it would inflame passions of many Moslems. There was enough criteria to actually work out using extrapolations of normal bell curves the minimum number of fanatical martyrs that the event could be expected to produce. My own version calculated that this would lead to the creation of an additional minimum of 15000 fanatical martyr types (of whom probably a couple of thousand have been used up - but unfortunately these merely put in place a replicating agenda). Thus Bush created and then leaves lying around at least 10000 still ticking time bombs "to make the world a safer place". And you think the killing of one more leader will stop this lot? Your world, and my world, will be a very dangerous world for a lot longer because of US stupidity, thuggery and greed.

      Mr D - 2011-05-19 11:24

wtf are u the cia, fbi, nsa, uncle, boss, nss, whatever get a f8765g life man

      slg - 2011-05-19 15:37

The US invaded Afghanistan AFTER it was attacked by Al-Quaida based in Afghanistan

      Grunk - 2011-05-20 07:53

Dear Slug - and your point is? No one denies he was in Afghanistan - but to track one man is a lot easier to do when you concentrate say $1 Billion of resources on identifying and tracking one man and sending in a search and destroy/cruise missile situation rather than trying to occupy a land with notoriously difficult terrain and extremely pugnacious fighters who control whole swathes of territory and cost your country (let alone the Afghanis) in excess of $200 Billion. Of course, as is usual with the US there were other agendas as well.

      slg - 2011-05-20 08:11

The point is that the US did not create Al-Quaida and the Taliban, which is what you say in your message. You also pretend AQ and the Taliban are not making choices. Do you that you're supporting the Mafia of the international community?

  • tabakenna - 2011-05-19 12:54
