Seoul - A North Korean soldier defected by walking over the heavily fortified border and handing himself in to the South Korean military on Monday, a news report said.

"He crossed the border in Hwacheon, Gangwon Province, on foot, and arrived at one of our guard posts" around 08:00 (23:00 GMT on Sunday), a defence ministry official was quoted as saying by Yonhap News Agency.

"He then expressed his will to defect," he said, speaking on condition of anonymity. The man was presumed to be a member of the armed forces, and appeared to be a teenager, he said.

Hundreds flee the impoverished, isolated communist North each year, but most are civilians who cross into China and reach South Korea via South-East Asian nations, or less frequently by sea, the report said.

This was the first defection by military personnel across the border since 2012, it said.

There was no detected unusual military activity from the North, the report said, citing the unnamed official.
