Obama: These tragedies must end

2012-12-17 07:09

Newtown - President Barack Obama vowed on Sunday to use all his power to stop gun massacres like the slaughter of 20 little children at a Connecticut school, saying "these tragedies must end".

Obama vented passion and anger as he told the grief-stricken community of Newtown, reeling from the unspeakable horror of Friday's rampage, that he was consoling victims of the fourth mass shooting of his presidency.

"Can we say that we're truly doing enough to give all the children of this country the chance they deserve to live out their lives in happiness and with purpose?" he said, as 26 candles burned by his podium to remember the victims.

"I've been reflecting on this the last few days, and if we're honest with ourselves, the answer is no. We are not doing enough, and we will have to change."

Obama's remarks, though impassioned and appearing to set a new mission for his presidency of curtailing rampant gun violence, did not propose specific solutions, in keeping with the sombre tone of the apolitical vigil service.

Heartrending sobs broke the silence as Obama slowly read the names of six heroic adults who died trying to protect their innocent charges as gunman Adam Lanza, 20, unleashed terror with a military-style assault rifle.

"Charlotte, Daniel, Olivia, Josephine, Ana, Dylan, Madeline, Catherine, Chase, Jesse, James, Grace, Emilie, Jack, Noah, Caroline, Jessica, Benjamin, Avielle, Allison, God has called them all home....

"We can't tolerate this anymore. These tragedies must end, and to end them we must change," Obama said, implicitly rebuking those who argue that efforts to introduce more gun control laws would do little to stop killings.

"Surely, we can do better than this," the newly re-elected president said, appearing to set up a new political battle with America's powerful gun lobby with the potential to define his second term.

Obama promised to use "whatever power this office holds" to engage Americans, law enforcement and health professionals to try to prevent more tragedies like the one that struck Newtown.

"Because what choice do we have? We can't accept events like this as routine. Are we really prepared to say that we are powerless in the face of such carnage?"

Medication does not make people psychotic. Pscopathy is the result of genetic predisposition and environmental factors. I'm sorry, but you can't some up all the gun violence that has occurred to owe to "over medication" . These shooters are sick people and are 1 in a million -the US needs to change their gun policy and gun control to prevent things like this from happening again.

      SarelJBotha - 2012-12-17 11:57

Remove the gun and he will simply poison people or find some other means to kill.

      kseyffert - 2012-12-17 23:11

Abi the US can not change it's gun policy. The policy is the direct result of the constitution that guarantees their freedoms. Once you start messing with what does not suit you right now, where do you stop and THEN what is the constitution really other than an excuse to rule that can be changed at will. A short walk to another dictatorship... The US constititution guarentees the right to bear arms for a reason. It is a key point. Mess with it at your peril because I promise that a corrupt government (I am not saying that the current one is, I am not saying it is not wither mind)once they have you disarmed will NEVER give you the means to defend yourself from it again. Rather fix the problems in your society that cause these sick people to go un-treated. and yes, take a careful look at the drug companies. Your government as it is today has one serious flaw. Lobbying. Only the super rich can afford it and they always have a vested interest that is not in the public good but in the good of their pockets. don't be miss led by hype and scare taktiks. You only get one chance. You have a great country. Keep it that way for the RIGHT reasons. Don't give it away for the wrong ones.

@ssmonareng Dahmer was doing horrible things to dead animals long before his parents divorce. Most serial killers start off on animals.Dahmers case is totally unrelated to Adam Lanza. The only common ground both phsycopaths."leave the gun laws" cos the current laws have worked so well for the innocent.

      SarcasticAgnostic - 2012-12-17 17:35

I'm pretty sure all those murderers ate bread too, do you want to ban that too?

  • phaldiemeyer - 2012-12-17 09:02

These tragedies will continue because that's the American mindset...if you disagree with me it's war. If the American government always use war to threaten and subdue those who oppose them why did they think individual Americans must act differently?? Those youngsters think it's the norm.

Changing the gun policy to make ownership more difficult, with a proper ownership database and owner/user competency tests and qualifications is proably a reasonable measure, but it will have little or no effect on mentally deranged people who do this sort of thing. No guns means that they will use knives, cross bows, whatever. We all know that the anti-gun lobby will jump on this big time and seek to disarm law abiding citizens. Disarming them will be the wrong way to go because illegal firearms will just proliferate, usually 99.9% in the hands of criminals, leaving the unarmed victims powerless. As far as educating a nation goes, the American federal government and their state counterparts, along with a slew of other western nations, chose some time ago to move out from under the protecting shadow of the Almighty. No prayers, no bibles, no religious instruction. When the devil is given a free hand, anything can happen, and usually does. Then they blame God. Then people ask, in their ignorance, but understandably: "Where was God when this happened?" Well, you asked him to leave, so rather than force himself upon you, he did what you asked.

You were doing ok until you started dribbling about how this all powerful god just decided to leave because we asked him to, what utter BS! In effect you are saying is that prior to the removal of religion from US schools, all acts of violence against school kids was perpetrated with the blessing of this so-called god. If this god decided not to "force himself" (I like the way you assume to assign a human gender to a god) upon us then how come terrible things have happened to devout religious people throughout history?

Look forward to Jeremy explaining all the church shootings

      kseyffert - 2012-12-17 23:29

gordan, some years ago, we had a few gunmen walk into a church throw some hand grenades and start shooting the place up. Thankfully, one or two attendees had come armed that day and they shot back at the attackers chasing them off early. I seem to remember one or two of them also being shot dead... I also remember the firestorm that brewed about worshipers caring guns to church with them "into the house of the lord". It seems that have forgotten that we need to be willing to protect ourselves if we want to be safe. Sadly, that means that we need to be willing to defend ourselves and those around us and that in turn means having the tools and willingness to use them. Removing those tools does not remove them from those who mean us harm it only makes there objectives easier to achieve. If those staff members who died had been armed. any one of them would have been able to stop this kid sooner. Many children's lives would have been saved and all or most of the staff members who lost their lives too. You need to go to the root causes and that is the defects in your society and treat them not take the easy non effective route of restricting the tools used. This is tantamount to burying your head in the sand as the tsunami approaches... It won't solve a thing and leave you completely exposed and totally unprepared when it arrives.

  • Jeremy.Traygon.Opperman - 2012-12-17 10:05

Yes, but its ok to fly drones over civilian areas in the middle east and kill children and woman...

  • stanley.lefleur - 2012-12-17 10:45

@jeremy002, I would say you,be hit the nail on the head squarely! People don't want God in their lives, because it would mean accountability, and then blame God when tragedy strikes, because the devil was allowed to have a field day.

      SarcasticAgnostic - 2012-12-17 17:37

The same devil created by your god? The same creation, that your god doesn't seem to be able to handle? So much for Omnipotence.

  • SarelJBotha - 2012-12-17 11:55

In the end, liberal policies aimed at breaking the family down is the real evil that causes these sort of acts. Policies that democrats, like oBummer wholeheartedly support.

      SarcasticAgnostic - 2012-12-17 17:42

I dont know about you, but leaning either to far conservative(dictatorship), or too far liberal(lawless anarchy), is a bad idea. There needs to be some balance between the two. That balance has clearly not been found.
