Obama 'not bluffing' against Iran

2013-03-04 22:17

Washington - US Vice President Joe Biden says President Barack Obama isn't bluffing when he says he'll use military action if ultimately necessary to prevent Iran from acquiring a nuclear weapon.

Biden told a powerful pro-Israel lobby's annual conference on Monday that protecting Israel is in the United States' interest.

Biden says the US still prefers a diplomatic option on Iran but that the window for that is closing.

Biden is cautioning against acting too hastily.

He says every other option must be exhausted to ensure the world community will be supportive if there's a need for a military intervention.

Biden says efforts to delegitimise Israel as a Jewish state are the most dangerous change he's seen as it related to Israel's security.

He says Israel's legitimacy is non-negotiable for the US

  • dunkie56 - 2013-03-04 23:16

The US is desperate to maintain it's hold militarily on the world ..Israel is determined to maintain it's position of power as the only nuclear country in the Middle East..two paranoid countries quite capable of starting world war three..the world can only watch and wonder where this will all end..perhaps Armageddon is in it's initial phase!

U r the stupid person i ever heard from, hw can a 1 billion dollar military budget for 10 yrz compete with 750 billion dollar military budget for 50 yrz, thats abt 10 billion against 20 trillion dollar millitary, u jc a lunatic iran cannot bring war 2 the US soil even combine with all middle east countries and china, that is impossible - 2013-03-05 08:41

China has to give and maintain work for 1,4 billion of its citizens. To do so, China needs to create jobs and to protect their largest customer base (the West). China will be the first one to attack Iran if Iran threatens the West. China is looking for ways to please the West and this is their best way to do it. It is not by chance that China is investing billions in the Israeli economy – from buying up Israeli hi-tech companies to building a railroad from Eilat to Ashdod so that they can undercut the Suez Canal. China’s position in this world clear, they will protect their interests at all cost – and their interest is the Western nations who buy their products.

      fidel.uncensored - 2013-03-05 09:37

China already has 1/5 of the world's population to look after, does it want more. While it has said that it will take more responsibilities in world affairs, It has no interest in being a world leader like the US. Look at Deng Xiaoping's 24 character strategy on China's foreign and security policy, "Observe calmly; secure our position; cope with affairs calmly; hide our capacities and bide our time; be good at maintaining a low profile; and never claim leadership." China will only look after its own interests as we all know. It sees the rest of the world in roughly the same way it did during the Ming - outside, different, beyond, distant. China doesn't do things the western way, therefore western assumptions often don't apply, therefore people like you often do not understand.

  • dunkie56 - 2013-03-04 23:45

The US better start to realize that the rest of the world cannot stand by and watch Israel drag us all into mankind's destruction!Russia China India could all decide to call the US's bluff and launch a preemptive strike against this paranoid Israeli state,if the hand is diseased cut it off, before it infects the whole body..God forbid such a scenario could play out but how much more war talk can this tense world stand. The world economy is in dire straits facing down the possibility of the greatest shake up since the Industrial revolution! This is not the best time for lunatics to call for war and draw lines in the sand.If Russia for example decided that the situation had got to far out of hand they have the "Bulava" missile system that the Israeli "iron dome"cannot stop and this weapon could do the trick and lets see if the US would entertain nuclear war with Russia and China to punish these for this drastic action done to bring sanity to the world! All this could happen before the US could stop it from happening..better some would say 100million deaths than the whole of man kind being destroyed...dangerous times indeed and all thanks to the lunatics in Tel Aviv!

      Larry - 2013-03-05 06:02

It is Iran that will bring a war upon itself, and the regional and worldwide fallout will be of its own making.

Dankie, The notion that the USA is the only ones, who will prevent Iran having nuclear weapons, is just plain childish, and playing silly political games!!! Iran, being an exporter of terrorism, having nuclear weapons, will be as dangerous for the USA, Russia and China. And they ALL know this. It is an issue, hijacked by the lunatics of the violent left, who made this an East-West issue, which is lunacy!! And OFF COURSE........Israel had to be brought into this. Spewing out a bit of extra Israeli HATRED, is always good for these LOOSERS!!! Dankie, you write 'lovely' stories, and if I was you, I would not do this for nothing. I suggest you write some cheap science fiction novels, for school kids, and make some money on the side !!!! - 2013-03-05 08:48

Maybe you right about Russia. But China and India want nothing to do with Iran. Israel is now India’s No3 weapons supplier while Russia has fallen to 5th place. China is investing billions of dollars in the Israeli economy. Etc etc

      dunkie56 - 2013-03-05 09:11

@anthony and others your continual slating of Russia shows an obsessive mindset that is surely living in the past..such continual spewed hatred can get you into trouble you should mollify your out bursts bring some balance to your propaganda and stop insulting one of the greatest nations on earth..who knows maybe a FSB operative will come visit you one day and murder you with plutonium..check the food you eat and don't dine out in uncontrolled environments the US is not the only country that has black ops and internet monitoring abilities..the "Ruskies"just don't speak about what they can do... they do it ..when the Good ole US woke up one morning the "Ruskies" had a man in space..don't you remember?

King, Iran has the backing of Russia - not China

      fidel.uncensored - 2013-03-05 09:34

China has invested billions in Iran with the intention to expanding this to the construction of new nuclear power stations. They are building cars, bridges, high rise apartment buildings, etc, and like most countries will do anything to protect their interests in that country. China's trade with Iran stands at $40 billion p.a. and China is not only Iran's largest customer for crude oil, it is also a colossal investor in Iran's energy and transport sectors. - 2013-03-05 13:47

The European Union and China are two of the biggest traders in the world. China is now the EU's 2nd trading partner behind the United States and the EU is China's biggest trading partner. China and Europe now trade well over €1 billion a day. U.S. goods and services trade with China totalled $539 billion. The relationship between China and the west is growing strong. Iran is insignificant and will be sacrificed at a moments notice. Iran needs to wake up - their drive for nuclear arms is not winning them any friends, while the only losers in this arrangement is the Iranian people who struggle now, more than ever, to pay for a loaf of bread.

      fidel.uncensored - 2013-03-05 13:58

Iran may be “isolated” from the United States and Western Europe, but from the BRICS to NAM (the 120 member countries of the Non-Aligned Movement), it has the majority of the global South on its side. And then, of course, there are those staunch Washington allies, Japan and South Korea, have plead for exemptions from the boycott/embargo of Iran’s Central Bank. You seem to forget that the Middle Kingdom and Persia have been doing business for almost two millennia.

  • kortbroek.duplessis - 2013-03-05 03:42

Mr Obama with respect sir you guys are broke and can't afford any more wars. Afghanistan would have been a walk in the park compared to Iran. Military action is just not a doable option unless there is an direct military threat to the US

      Anthonym Michael - 2013-03-05 06:07

Kortbroek, With respect, this 'USA being broke" is more some political silly talk, than reality!!! You take for instance a natural disater, like hurricane Sandy, last November. An unbelievable destruction, with a price tag of between 40 and 50 BILLION US, to fix it up !!!!!! The USA is the ONLY country world ,that does not need to ask ANYONE, for any kind of aid. As a matter of fact, although they had to slow this down, the USA, even in a financial crisis, are still sending BILLIONS to Africa in Emergency aid, thereby saving the lives of MILLIONS of Africans, who are starving or who are sick !!!

      TheBigTT - 2013-03-05 07:04

What's another $10 Trillion to fight a war? China doesn't want to see another country gain power, especially one like Iran. It's rather convienant to loan the US money to fight the battles and China stays out. When the US is bankrupt, it's that many less countries they'll have to deal with when they become the biggest super power in the World.

      TheJaydedKing - 2013-03-05 07:38

Anthony - Im afraid he is right. They may not ask for aid but they sell government bonds to China and Saudi. USA needs to take care of its domestic requirements before it can take on another war.

  • Mark - 2013-03-05 05:50

Typical! America just can not help themselves. They always have to stick their noses and troops in and claim a national security risk had force them into action. I thought people were meant to learn from previous mistakes. America seems to be in the business of manufacturing weapons and enemies wherever they go. We all know by now that the best thing you can do when faced with a well armed and organised religious radicals is to threaten them with violence unless they adopt your way of doing things which they deem to be unholy. How is that working out for you guys?

      TheBigTT - 2013-03-05 08:49

Mark, Ahmadinejad has called for the death of every non-Muslim in the World. He gets a nuclear weapon, his dream becomes that much closer to reality. When a country says they want to destroy the US, we say BS, we'll kick your ass! China will have to fund it but by hell, we'll do it. I'm glad to see Obama has grown a sack and is finally standing up, it's the first thing he's done right in 4.5 years. And Mark, I'm fine with the US keeping it's big fat nose out of the business of the World, however, I'm sure you expect us to keep giving the World billions in aid abd then f*** off.

      fidel.uncensored - 2013-03-05 08:59

"Mark, Ahmadinejad has called for the death of every non-Muslim in the World" He's never said any of that, try not to be so lazy. "And Mark, I'm fine with the US keeping it's big fat nose out of the business of the World, however, I'm sure you expect us to keep giving the World billions in aid abd then f*** off." There would be no need for the US to give other countries aid if she stopped screwing these countries economically and politically.

      TheBigTT - 2013-03-05 09:54

Fidel, Sure I'm too lazy to quote Ahmadinejad word for word, but I'd rather be lazy than ignorant. During his last speech that he gave at the UN, he prayed for the quick return of al Mahdi to cleanse the Earth. He has stated in previous numerous speeches that upon the return the cross will be broken and the pigs will be slain throughout the World. An easy search will find numerous independant sites with his speeches so there's no excuse for your ignorance. Billions are spent each year in countries for humanitarian needs, countries that the US has never had a military presence in. I can't say that I agree with most conflicts that the US is involved in but in cases where leaders are ordering the destruction of its helpless citizens, where the armies are raping and murdering women and children, where women are beaten for the most insane crimes ever thought up, to say in those cases that the US is screwing up a country is showing your continued abundance of blind ignorance.

      fidel.uncensored - 2013-03-05 12:52

Of course the US will not accept Arabs and Africans killing each other, but will willingly do it for them. Author Garry Wills has commented on this American benevolence toward foreigners: "We believe we can literally 'kill them with kindness', moving our guns forward in a seizure of demented charity. It is when America is in her most altruistic mood that other nations better get behind their bunkers." You Sir is befallen with American exceptionalism!

  • Bill McKimm - 2013-03-05 06:22

Yes he is. This one hasn't got the balls for any military action because he was elected by the population that is closest to those that fight wars. All he and Kerry can do is rattle around like a stone in a tin can; and God help the world because of it.

Even though I believe that Iran shouldn't be allowed nukes, what about Isreal, India and Pakistan? Its the double standards that is annoying. Remember the WMD that Iraq had. - 2013-03-05 08:57

True Jason, but Israel, India and Pakistan have not threatened another member state of the United Nations with annihilation. google and youtube the speeches and videos of Iran's supreme leadership and their talk about wiping out a nation of the face of the earth, and then you will understand why the world doesn’t want Iran (which is run by mad religious Mullas) to also have nuclear weaponry. Jason do not forget that Saudi, UAE, Qatar and the other gulf states fear Iran as much as the West.

      fidel.uncensored - 2013-03-05 09:26

"True Jason, but Israel, India and Pakistan have not threatened another member state of the United Nations with annihilation." Why do Zionist continue to peddle this hasbara rhyme even though it has been pointed out countless times that Ahmadinejad has never threatened to "wipe Israel off the map", and yet it is Iran that is being constantly threatened with military strikes by the Zionist regime. "Mad mullahs" is just a propaganda term to keep simpletons from thinking too much about what their government is doing. The mullahs are self-interested elites who actions are perfectly explicable and rational with respect to their desire to pursue their own self-interest. There are no crazy religious fundamentalists running Iran. Iran is run be elites who run it first and foremost for their own benefit. Religion is a justificatory fig-leaf for what they do (as it is everywhere) - a way of keeping the masses on side. The people who run Iran will do whatever they think suits their interests best, and don't care very much about Islam.

What has the US stolen from SA in your lifetime?

      AllcoveredinNinjas - 2013-03-05 10:37

Spot on Tom , neither have I ever come across a war that has been 'profitable' to the states involved (a few elites and associated companies by virtue of industry). No businessman thinks killing off a market is a good idea, its always better to have more people to trade with . Traditionally , trade fosters relations making it less likely people to want to kill you. Wars are fought over ideology , influence and power. The concept of a buyer and seller both benefiting from a transaction seems lost in the world of prescibed hatred , easy to spot because within this paradigm of irrational hatred , no action by the accused party would ever result in a favourable view.

      fidel.uncensored - 2013-03-05 13:09

"No businessman thinks killing off a market is a good idea, its always better to have more people to trade with." A single business person would not think like that, but a cabal of nasty greedy murderous psychopathic b@stards are not restrained by any societal values, they operate in a rigged market. Look at the US defence budget, who do you suppose this money is spent on besides wages and salaries to the soldiers. Now consider a destroyed country that needs reconstruction, who do the construction contracts go to. Consider even further the implications of having a pliable government in the said country that is obligated to buy weapons and open up its market to other products from country of their "liberators". It's even worse if the "liberated" country has strategic resources which are coveted by the business class from "liberators. It means that they can dictate the prices and the quantities allowed for such resources. It's the reason why the elected governments of Iran and other South American countries were overthrown by the democracy loving US.
