Observers reach Syria massacre village

Beirut - United Nations observers on Friday reached the Syrian village of Al-Kubeir in the Hama province where dozens of residents were massacred two days ago, activists said.

The monitors on Thursday were fired at by gunmen and forced to turn back as they tried to reach the village located in the central province of Hama.

"The observers first headed to the village of Maarzaf where the victims were buried and then to Al-Kubeir to survey the damage from army shelling," activist Abdel Karim al-Hamwi said.

According to the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, at least 55 people, including women and children, were massacred in Al-Kubeir on Wednesday by pro-regime militiamen known as Shabiha.

The government has denied involvement while the international community has denounced the killings with UN chief Ban Ki-Moon warning that Syria stood on the brink of full blown civil war.

Thanks for the observers UN! Further proof that you are a toothless old rickety dog that can barely even manage a bark now days. I can only imagine the poor guys in blue that get sent their by their diplomat fatcat superiors to get shot at, only to report what the whole world knows already. These guys are getting massacred because they believe in freedom and liberty. Renamed from the League of Nations after they failed to do jack about WW2. Haven't bothered doing anything since then - Rwanda, Liberia, DRC, Somalia, Serbia, Bosnia, Cambodia. The UN is a failure, and we should all be ashamed.

Its only as strong as its 151 member-countries want it to be. Recently it did well for Libya.

Fred - Absolutely, but the reality is somewhat closer to their being 141 passengers and about 10 real decision influencers. After Mogadishu, where 18 US soldiers lost their lives, Clinton was too afraid to commit to anything. Come '94, a million people lose their lives while the area commander of the UN uncovers plans for the Rwandan genocide before it happens. The UN denies his appeals to get involved, and tells him to report it to the president of Rwanda, who is a player in the genocide anyway. The genocide spills into the DRC, and another massive civil war starts, 5 million dead. Clinton's campaigning for another term in office. 100k dead in Bosnia. Now, I'm not a conspiracy theorist - But look where the UN/US have crossed "The Mogadishu Line". Iraq and Libya etc. Only one thing gets the decision makers attention at the UN, and its not human rights.

The attacks were carried out by government militia. Afterwards, the army came in and ordered villagers to bury the dead before the UN arrived.
