Sydney - Fiji and some of its neighbours in the Pacific are bracing for Tropical Cyclone Pam on Wednesday which is expected to intensify as it heads their way.

Residents have been warned of thunderstorms, possible flash flooding, gusty winds and high seas. Weather forecasters say the system is moving south of the Solomon Islands towards Vanautu and Fiji.

Pam was upgraded on Tuesday to a category three system and forecasters say it could reach category five by the end of the week.

The Fiji Meteorological Service has issued a strong wind warning for the northern areas of Vanua Levu, Lau and the waters off Yasawa and Mamanuca.

Vanuatu Meteorological Services issued a cyclone warning for the provinces of Torba, Sanma, Penama and Malampa.

It said the system is expected to move in on Wednesday, tracking in a south-south-easterly direction.

Heavy rainfall was expected throughout northern Vanuatu, with flooding and flash flooding expected over low-lying areas.
