Pakistan declares holiday for prophet

2012-09-19 14:01

Islamabad - The Pakistan government is to declare Friday a national holiday in honour of the Muslim prophet Muhammad, officials said on Wednesday, in response to a US-made film deemed insulting to Islam.

The cabinet decided to make Friday an official "day of expression of love for the prophet" after discussing the Innocence of Muslims movie, which has triggered more than a week of violent protests across the Islamic world, a senior government official said.

The move came after religious parties called for a day of protest on Friday to denounce the film.

The head of a leading Sunni party, the Sunni Tehreek, on Monday urged people across the country to close their businesses and hold rallies against the film, which was made by extremist Christians in the United States.

Sources said traders and transporters associations in the largest city and commercial hub Karachi had backed the call.

Around 500 protesting lawyers broke through a gate to Islamabad's heavily-guarded diplomatic enclave on Wednesday, chanting anti-US slogans and castigating the Pakistan government for its "criminal silence" over the film.

More than 30 people have been killed around the world during more than a week of attacks and violent protests linked to the controversial film, seen as insulting to the Prophet Muhammad.

Afghanistan, Bangladesh and Pakistan have all blocked access to YouTube, following the video-sharing website's failure to take down the film.

Wednesday also saw the publication by a French magazine of a series of provocative cartoons showing a nude Prophet Muhammad which are likely to further inflame Muslim anger.

Still trying to determine who the puppet masters are and what their agenda is in this saga. I've seen far worse depictions of islam on the net and in movies without a peep from the muslim world.

Western Propaganda !!!! When you attack black people, They call it "Racism", When you attack Jewish people, They call it "Anti-semetism", When you attack Women, They call it "Gender discrimination", When you attack Homosexuality, They call it "Intolerance", When you attack your Country, They call it "Terrorism", When you attack a Religious sect, they call it "Hate speech", But when They attack at the dignity of our Beloved Prophet MUHAMMAD (Sallal laho Alaihi Wasallam) They call it " Freedom of Expression"

      allcoveredinNinjas - 2012-09-19 16:19

You are free to voice your distaste about blacks, jews, women, homosexuals, countries, religous sects or whatever. Thats freedom of speech and expression .No-one is going to imprison or kill you for being patriarchial . Just because you don't understand it don't ask for special protection against it. Tyranical ideaology insisting by way of violence on special treatment from freedom of expression from the rest of the world, what audacity .

      erich.goosen - 2012-09-19 16:32

When you attack and kill innocent people in the name of Mohamed, what do you call it? Rather use your energy and religious power to condemn those Muslims extremists who are throwing the world in chaos and turmoil and are killing human beings indiscriminately. I am sure this not what your beloved prophet would have wanted. In the same breath I must condemn people who wilfully degrade the religious and sacret icons of other religious groups. You will not achieve anything positive by making inflammatory gestures such as this French cartonist.

The film The Innocence of Muslims, was not that well put together, although it does get it's point accross, but I smell a bigger rat here. Interesting that the US Embassy in Libiya was attacked on 9/11 and there are questions as to the Embassador as to whether he was a homosexual. That's really called putting a target on your back in a country that does not allow it and you could get stoned for it!

  • ziyaad.cajee.7 - 2012-09-19 20:18

@ zaatheist and the rest Why is there so much hatred for Muslims ? Real Muslims around the world NEVER condone any acts of violence to any human being, as the loss of human lives around the world ( Iraq, afghan , Burma, Syria, Libya , america and the list goes on ) is completely deplorable and this insanity of people killing innocent people because of the tyrants, dictators and war mongering presidents Is unfortunately the state the world is in now. Let us pray for peace instead of taking sides and ridiculing each other.

  • pocho.basura - 2012-09-20 01:15 appropriate: The International Day of Peace, sometimes unofficially known as World Peace Day, is observed annually on 21 September. It is dedicated to peace, and specifically the absence of war and violence, such as might be occasioned by a temporary ceasefire in a combat zone for humanitarian aid access. The day was first celebrated in 1982, and is kept by many nations, political groups, military groups, and peoples. To inaugurate the day, the "Peace Bell" is rung at UN Headquarters (in New York City). The bell is cast from coins donated by children from all continents except Africa, and was a gift from the United Nations Association of Japan, as "a reminder of the human cost of war"; the inscription on its side reads, "Long live absolute world peace".
