Pakistan rejects US safe haven claims

Islamabad - Pakistan on Saturday rejected US Secretary of Defence Leon Panetta's recent comments on militant safe havens in Pakistan, a move that could intensify tensions between troubled allies Islamabad and Washington.

"We feel that the secretary of defence is oversimplifying some of the very complex issues we are all dealing with in our efforts against extremism and terrorism," Pakistan's foreign ministry said in a statement.

"We strongly believe that such statements are misplaced and unhelpful in bringing about peace and stability in the region."

Panetta said on Thursday during a trip to Afghanistan that stabilisation efforts in Afghanistan would remain difficult as long as militants had safe havens in Pakistan.

"It is very important for Pakistan to take steps. It is an increasing concern, the issue of safe haven, and we are reaching the limits of our patience," he said, using some of the strongest language from a senior US official on Washington's strained relations with Islamabad.

US officials often describe Pakistan as an unreliable partner in the war on militancy and demand tougher action against militant groups, especially those based in Pakistan's volatile tribal regions near the border with Afghanistan.

The United States wants Pakistan to go after the Haqqani group, which is close to the Afghan Taliban and al-Qaeda, and is blamed for some of the deadliest attacks on Western forces in Afghanistan.

"Pakistan has repeatedly said that it will not allow its territory to be used against any country, nor will it allow any safe havens on its territory," the foreign ministry said on Saturday, adding that Islamabad will "follow its own timeline" and strategy on operations against militants.

these taliban are continously attacking allied forces deep into afghanistan and even some time at the nato headquarters, strange to see they are unable to stop these millitants with in afghanistan and blamming pakistan for doing nothing,if pakistan is doing nothing then what is it that these allied forces are doing there instead of continuously bombing innocent civilians

Doesn't make sense. As you know, Waziristan is a cesspool of terrorism. Waziristan is in Pakistan. Therefore Pakistan is responsible. Nato is not continuously bombing innocent civilians. This is absurd. It goes to great lengths to avoid harm to civilians. When it happens, it is completely unintentional.

fred. we never blame the allied forces for these millitants attacks with in pakistan after all they are getting there weapons form some where, because its our duty to control them no matter who is helping them and please keep in mind waziristan is a landlock area, and regarding your second comment that its not intentional i hope you dont want me to give you the numbers killed in such unintentional attacks,by the way what happen to that soldier who have killed two or three families in afghanistan did he went for judicial process as promised. instead of blamming others if we fullfill our duties i think we could solve our problems and keep in mind pakistan is not only alone but also a poor country where as on the other side there are 47 countries together and most rich why do you people blame only pakistan for theirs defeats.
