Palestinian 'mother of martyrs' dies

2013-03-18 09:07

Gaza City — A Palestinian lawmaker known as the "mother of martyrs" who praised and supported three of her sons who were killed while carrying out deadly attacks against Israelis died on Sunday, a Gaza official said.

Mariam Farhat, who said she wished she had 100 sons to die while attacking Israelis, died in a Gaza city hospital of health complications including lung ailments and kidney failure, health official Ashraf Al-Kidra said. She was 64 years old.

The mother of 10 first came to attention in 2002 when she recorded a farewell video with her 19-year-old son, Mohammed, giving him her blessing the night before he undertook a shooting attack in a Jewish settlement in the Gaza Strip.

The video showed Mohammed holding hands with his mother, who prayed for him to become a "martyr", the term Palestinians use for militants killed in attacks on Israelis. Armed with grenades and automatic rifles, he broke into a study hall, killing five seminary students before he was shot dead by a soldier.

In a video that mother and son made together just before the attack, Farhat said: "I wish I had 100 boys like Mohammad. I'd sacrifice them for the sake of God."

"When I see all the Jews in Palestine killed, that will be enough for me," his mother said on camera. "I wish he will kill as many as he can, so they will be scared."

Target of airstrikes

After Israel withdrew from Gaza in 2005, the Farhat family returned to the Jewish settlement where Mohammed undertook the militant attack. They took what they said was the piece of wire fence Mohammed had cut to get in, and mounted it on an outer wall of their home.

Farhat's other two sons were killed by Israeli forces while they were preparing attacks. Another son is in an Israeli prison.

The firebrand loyalist of the Islamic militant Hamas survived three Israeli airstrikes that targeted her house between 2006 and 2010.

She also survived an Israeli military assault on her house, when one of Hamas' top bomb makers, Emad Akel, was killed in a hail of fire in her front yard after hiding in her basement for a year.

Years later, in 2006, she became one of the few women elected to the Palestinian parliament as a Hamas legislator.

She told The Associated Press that she cried for her slain sons but that "jihad [holy war] comes ahead of everything, including my feelings as a mother".

Israelis view such attacks as terrorism and are generally appalled by the way some Palestinians celebrate such militant attacks.

About 4 000 Palestinians attended her funeral, including Hamas Prime Minister Ismail Haniyeh.

ooo... they blow up so quick. When a mother wishes for her children to die while murdering others… from Gaza to Damascus, from Yemen to Afghanistan, from the sandy Mediterranean shores Libya to the cold Mountains of Kashmir - one wonders if there is something wrong with these mothers or with the religion.

      Fidel Chavista - 2013-03-18 12:18

Proud indeed, like the other mothers whose sons are killed serving in the army.

Mohammed I love how you show your own bigotry while alleging its presence in other groups. Hilarious!

      Dave Smith - 2013-03-18 10:24

Mohammed, any religion, culture or creed that actively promotes the use of their children as suicide bombers deserves no pity nor respect - full stop. No cause can be greater than the duty of a parent to protect their children - if this does happen (and always seems to be linked to Islam) then we are talking extremism and brain-washing.

What transgressions did the Jews do to deserve Hitler mohammed? There is also no apartheid in Israel, palestinians live in "palestine" while Israeli's live in Israel , to say so(Apartheid South Africa is childs play to Apartheid Israel) is a great insult to the 10s of millions of africans who suffered under the system. As for your "anti Israel week", there were more speakers then journalists and "listeners" to the non event. As for the disgraceful behaviour displayed by your self deluded, lie infested ilk at Wits , i won't go there. Also , don't try talk on behalf of any Xtians , muslim treatment of Xtian minorities in "mudslim" nations is quite well known,it's the horror you try paint Isreali's doin to others. As for your "myths" , there were only christians, jews and perhaps a few pagans in the holy land before muhammed thumb sucked a religion of peace/violence based on the other 2 peaceful Abrahamic faiths. Didn't even have the decency to learn to read so he could see how he barbarised other faiths

      Avremel Niselow - 2013-03-18 10:49

Konrad, for Mohammed the mere fact of being Jewish is a "transgression".

      Avremel Niselow - 2013-03-18 10:55

Rather think what madness caused it.

      Avremel Niselow - 2013-03-18 18:57

Nope, the hatred of all non Muslims as evidenced in "martyrdom" everywhere.

    religion and politics,eish

      Coenraad Van Der Westhuizen - 2013-03-18 10:31

Religion IS politics with a funny hat.

      doberman.love.1 - 2013-03-18 11:14

When religion gives you the go-ahead to murder "non believers” (such as Christians, Jews, Hindu, Buddhists, Atheists or gays etc) go straight to paradise and collect 72 virgins! There is no place for politics – it’s foolish enough already.

  • Coenraad Van Der Westhuizen - 2013-03-18 10:32

This eye for an eye business, with children as the pawns... Now please, convince me that this is moral.
