Washington - Defence Secretary Leon Panetta says letting women serve in combat roles will strengthen the military's ability to win wars.

Panetta says the military is more capable and more powerful when it is open to, "all of the diverse strengths of the American peopleā€.

Panetta spoke on Thursday at a Pentagon ceremony in remembrance of slain civil rights leader Martin Luther King jnr, just hours before a news conference at which he plans to announce an end to the traditional exclusion of women from combat roles in the US military.

I support the idea of women in the armed forces, if they have the guts to serve then more honor to them. Most armed forces have a large number of women in them. The communication and organisational ability of women is a priceless commodity for armed forces. I just don't think women in the infantry is a good idea. Be pilots, naval officers, medics anything else.
