London - A British pensioner was jailed for 19 years on Monday, after admitting to a series of offences including child rapes, and making indecent photographs and films of child abuse.

The court in Exeter, southern England, heard that police stopped counting the number of indecent images and films on 65-year-old John Bidmead's computer when they reached 640 000, but believed he had more than 1 million.

"It is the largest amount in this part of the country as far as we are aware of," said prosecutor Richard Crabb.

Bidmead pleaded guilty to four counts of rape and six of indecent or sexual assaults on two girls between 2001 and 2007. He also pleaded guilty to 19 counts of taking or making indecent photographs or movies.

Police said that Bidmead had been streaming child porn onto his television when they called at his home after receiving a tip-off from Russian authorities.

According to Crabb, when Bidmead was confronted about the material he filmed of himself abusing young girls, he told police: "I don't want to see or hear it. I am guilty of everything shown on those videos."

His defence lawyer Sean Brunton told the court: "He entirely accepts that he has betrayed all his family and his friends and in particular the victims of his own offending.

"He told the probation officer that what he had done was shameful and he expects to die in prison. He said he deserves whatever punishment he is given," Brunton continued.
