Perry Niggerhead hunting lodge row

2011-10-02 22:25

Washington - Republican presidential hopeful Rick Perry came under pressure on Sunday to explain why his family's hunting retreat was called "Niggerhead" and why the racially offensive name remained painted on a giant stone there for years.

The Washington Post reported that the word was painted on a flat rock standing upright at the gated entrance of the secluded Perry family hunting refuge in Texas.

The 1 070 acre parcel, used for hunting and fishing retreats, was the venue of getaways hosted for decades by Perry, who entertained fellow lawmakers, friends and supporters there, the report said.

The Post said that the getaway was given its objectionable name long before being acquired by Perry, but that the Texas governor did not change it for years after obtaining the lease on the property.

The report said Perry had called it "an offensive name that has no place in the modern world," but that questions remained over his handling of the issue.

"Nigger," one of the most reviled words in the American lexicon, is a pejorative word used to denigrate African-Americans.

The Post said that the offensive word was still faintly visible under a coat of white paint.

Perry's campaign on Sunday, in a statement to the website, decried what it said were inaccuracies in the Post story.

Painted over

"A number of claims made in the story are incorrect, inconsistent, and anonymous, including the implication that Rick Perry brought groups to the lease when the word on the rock was still visible.

"The one consistent fact in the story is that the word on a rock was painted over and obscured many years ago," said Ray Sullivan, communications director,, a campaign website.

"Governor Perry and his family never owned, controlled or managed the property referenced in the Washington Post story. The 42 000-acre ranch is owned by the Hendricks Home for Children, a West Texas charity," Sullivan told Politico.

"Perry's father painted over offensive language on a rock soon after leasing the 1 000-acre parcel in the early 1980s. When Governor Perry was party to the hunting lease from 1997 to 2007, the property was described as northern pasture. He has not been to the property since 2006.

In 1991 the Texas Legislature passed a bill to rename old, offensive place names," Sullivan's statement to Politico said.

But the use of one of the most offensive American slurs drew immediate condemnation on Sunday from Herman Cain, who like Perry is vying for the 2012 Republican presidential nomination.

"My reaction is that [it] is very insensitive," Cain, an African-American, said on ABC television, adding that few words "inspire the kind of negativity like that particular word".

Cain added: "Since Governor Perry has been going there for years to hunt, I think that it shows a lack of sensitivity for a long time of not taking that word off of that rock and renaming the place."

In a separate interview with the Fox News Sunday programme, Cain said there is "no more vile negative word than the N-word, and for him to leave it there as long as he did, before I hear that they finally painted it over is just plain insensitive to a lot of black people in this country."

I know why it was called that-- "niggerheads" (Echinacea angustifolia) are a common flower found in that part of Texas. They are no longer called that.

"Peter Pumpkin Head came to Town...." Wait Wait!!!!! Change it to "Peter NI99erhead came to town...."

Much like our own indigenous coral tree. Times change, one has to adapt.

Sigh. American politics. Nearly as bad as SA politics.

      tootingdel - 2011-10-03 10:09

No they are worse! Do you realise how much money is wasted on campaigns there? And how many promises made to different groups to get them to support candidates? Makes the ANC look like amateurs in this respect I'm pleased to say!

"Nigger," one of the most reviled words in the American lexicon, is a pejorative word used to denigrate African-Americans. Uh, aren't they overreacting a bit. I know many whites who enjoy the word and there are many black rap artists who have made millions using that "reviled" word. There are many rap fans who paid for CD's just hear that "reviled" word blasted out of their stereo speakers. I think the author of this article needs to look around for a minute at reality before taking the easy way out with this politically correct crap he is spewing.

      Raymond - 2011-10-03 04:18

Jake, you sound like a Nigger. [see, that doesn't feel good, does it?] It doesn't matter which idiot white enjoys what, or if a rap artist makes money using it, the word has been and is used to mark people because of the color of their skin. It's been hurled around by murderers at many a lynching, etc. It's wrong.

      pawsaw - 2011-10-03 12:55

Jake, FYI: It is acceptable for the group concerned to use the word in question, however it becomes hatespeech when used in any way or form in America. I have this on good authority from and African American friend. JM has been condemned for doing the exact reverse here by repeatedly singing THAT song. Why? The people who are taking most umbrage at it call themselves by that name and it is acceptable (although of course they do not call to be killed). I believe everyone who reacts with outrage to a label must see it in context including JM because Boers/farmers are being targetted by cowards and racists so are very sensitive and he should have the smarts to know that there are many families who have lost loved Boers and family members this way and be mature enough to refrain from singing it out of respect for the victims families, be they white or black. It is the same thing in America although in this case it sounds like typical American politicking against a presidential hopeful where the offensive name has been painted over many years ago but the paint is wearing off revealing what was underneath it. The Perry's did not give it that name and tried to obliterate it so the whole thing is typical teabagging American politics. Unfortunately our majority despite their condemnation of policies in the West are very much enamoured of the ganagsta culture there, more is the pity.

      Kale - 2011-10-03 14:13

How about you stroll into a black neighborhood and call the first person you see a nigger.

      chrisssssss - 2011-10-03 14:29

The word is wrong in every aspect, whether it is used by blacks or mostly whites it is still wrong. if you do your research on rap music the word that is used there is,"NIGGA". Which shows affiliation with another black person. The word "nigger" is just plain ignorant. In my words they both should not be used, but back to the story, Perry has alot of explaining to do and this is going to be fun to hear.

  • AJ2 - 2011-10-03 05:30

Yes, it's a pejorative word, mostly used by African Americans to denigrate themselves more like it. That said and done, you'd think people would know better than to give people ammo to use against you..

  • Rodge the Dodge - 2011-10-03 08:10

It was painted over, but if you look very carefully, and catch the light right, then there it is.... so who is look to start something here. Its the race card again.

      DW - 2011-10-03 10:00

American politics at its best - trying to find the dirt on each other, even if it is a name on a rock painted over in the 1980's - at least this is all they have on each other. Nothing like the politics at home in SA. Africa is not for sissies.

  • Zambezi - 2011-10-03 09:16

Could any of the "African Americans" please let me know where in Africa they come from. They are no more African as I am European. Black African is a more accurate term. It's like me saying I am a European Africa.... not... I am a white Africa. It's just a convenient term to use me thinks.

  • Dumba1234 - 2011-10-03 09:56

Max dats a good one, WHIGGER what do you call a WHIGGER listening to RAP - daaivark - LMAO

  • Nkutist - 2011-10-03 11:16

Lol i must say the name is a little funny.... And to be honest the american black people don't make life easier for themselves. Through their own interaction they have watered down the meaning of Nigger... They call themelves that and spew it in their music, tv etc. So i find it quite stupid that people find it as offensive... But i do understand that when other races say it you never know whether their intention is to insult or not and thats where it gets messy. They should stop using the word completely, even though it might kill the Rap industry. You don't here black south africans tuning whats up my K****R to each other. Lol Eminem is regarded to be a whigger... Its just a ploy for Cain to get votes, dirty american politics...

  • Buygawd - 2011-10-03 16:55

If there is evidence that Perry passed that rock no more than 1 or 2 times before Niggerhead was painted over it will prove one thing,Perry is not a complete idiot. If there is evidence that Perry did pass this niggerhead sign more than once or twice without having it painted over it proves two things, 1- Perry is a racist 2- Perry is a complete idiot.

This area should be search for missing people bodies you may be surprise what you may find.

  • Don Lockwood - 2011-10-03 18:46

I am NOT a Rick Perry fan by any stretch of the imagination (I support Ron Paul). However I must defend Perry, as this racist label is thrown around constantly with wanton abandon. Niggerhead is just a word. By itself, it mean NOTHING, and carries with it absolutely NO racial slurs. The definition for the word Niggerhead is as follows: A bollard made from an old cannon; An isolated part of a coral reef; The coneflower; hard tussock on tundra; often moss Turret at top of locomotive boiler, over crown sheet, from which saturated steam is taken for operation of pumps, stoker, injectors, and headlight turbine slang for an isolated coral head, or any knob-like solitary protrusion, often semisubmerged, that's a hazard to navigation. Also, naval slang for a small winch or capstan. ... Don't all you Race Baiters ever take a day off?

      Buygawd - 2011-10-04 02:14

Perry already said he thought that word was offensive. So its a little late to use the defense "oh I just thought it meant naval slang for a capsan or a winch". So now the question is was Perry lying when he said he told his parents it was offensive and they painted over it the next time they were there or were the 7 people lying that told the reporter it was unpainted and in plain view many years after that, including a worker on the property that says he saw it as recently as 2008. There is 1 person or 7 not telling the truth.

  • Paula - 2011-10-03 21:43

Let's see, Rick Perry, tea bagger darling is accused of racism. Go figure.

  • Steve Kay - 2011-10-06 02:13

I can just see that guy replacing the sign with "work makes free" but in german. the sign over the gate of one of the death camps in WWII. Darn right it was true. they worked you till you couldnt work, and then they tossed you into the ovens. Perrys goal is not that - he just wants us to work until we cant work any more. And then starve on the street or burden our children - who will have their own problems. One has to wonder what perry's assets and income really are. I bet at least 10 mil.
