New York - Pablo Picasso's painting Les femmes d'Alger set a new auction record on Monday, selling for $179.4m in New York.

The winning bid of $160m before fees also surpassed the expectations of experts at Christie's, the auction house, who had projected the painting would sell for $140m.

The previous record of $142.4m was set at another Christie's action about a year and a half ago by the Francis Bacon painting Three Studies of Lucian Freud.

Picasso's multicolour Les femmes d'Alger shows four nude and semi-nude women painted in a mixture of abstract and realistic styles.

The previous record for a Picasso painting sold at action was $106.5m for Nude With Green Leaves and Bust in 2010.

The painting is among several works of contemporary art being auctioned at Christi's on Monday and Wednesday.
