Pope John Paul II to be beatified

Vatican City - The pope has approved a miracle attributed to Pope John Paul II's intercession and set May 1 as the date for the beloved pontiff to be beatified.

Pope Benedict XVI declared in a decree on Friday that the cure of a French nun who suffered from Parkinson's disease was miraculous, the last step needed for the beatification.

The May 1 ceremony is expected to draw hundreds of thousands of pilgrims to Rome to celebrate one of the most popular popes of all time. A second miracle is needed for John Paul to be made a saint.

Benedict put John Paul on the fast track to possible sainthood just weeks after he died in 2005, responding to the chants of "Santo Subito!" or "Sainthood immediately!" that erupted during his funeral.

oh please... I cannot believe that in this day and age people still cling to such utter rubbish... lets see him "cure" and amputee! Utter horse manure!

And I would dare to add that I'd like to follow this "cured" person's life after the event... Interesting to note that many other "miracle cures" claims do not follow up on the patients. I've read about a cancer cure that claimed to heal all their patients, and yet most died within 3 years of their "treatment". The others within the following 5 years. For all we know, the person in question was most probably undergoing medical treatment. If successful, then surely the doctors in question should be made the miracle workers, and not the bloke in robes who prayed over her?

Not bad for someone that sold Zyklon B Cyanide Gas to the Nazi's during WW II so that the Nazi’s could gas innocent men, women and children. And this same man that knowingly sold this viscous material to the Germans had the audacity to enter into religion. Did his conscious bother him? No – he realised selling religion was more lucrative than selling chemicals. What a farce!

IG Farben Chemical Company. In the early 1940s, that company employed a Polish chemist and salesman who sold cyanide gas, Zyklon B and Malathion to the Nazis for extermination of groups of people in Auschwitz. After the war the salesman joined the Catholic church and was ordained a priest. In 1958 he became Poland's youngest bishop and after Pope John Paul I's mysterious death, the ex-cyanide gas salesman Karol Wojtyla was elected to the papacy as Pope John Paul II in October 1978. In March 2000, he publicly apologized not for his war effort, but for the wickedness of the Christian religion. The plea for forgiveness also sought to pardon the use of 'violence in the service of truth' an often used fragile and treoubling referenece to the Inquisition. The apology read by the Pope was the result of four years of work by a panel of 28 theologians and scholars and was by far the most sweeping act by a leader of a major religion. On few occasions have ecclesiastical authorities ever acknowlegdegd the faults or abuses of which they themselves were guilty. There was concern that the apology was a major theological miscalculation that could undermine the Pope's weakening authority and the unanswered question posed by the international media was -- 'In whose name was the Pope asking for forgiveness?'
