Pope considered quitting for months

2013-02-11 14:27

Berlin - The pope's brother, Georg Ratzinger, says the pontiff had been advised by his doctor not to take any more transatlantic trips and had been considering stepping down for months.

Pope Benedict XVI announced on Monday that he would resign 28 February.

Talking from his home in Regensburg to the news agency dpa, Georg Ratzinger said his brother was having increasing difficulty walking and that his resignation was part of a "natural process”.

"His age is weighing on him," the 89-year-old said of his 85-year-old brother.

"At this age my brother wants more rest."

Georg Ratzinger did not answer his telephone for calls seeking further comment.

It is Africa's turn. We want to see one of our own there. Its long overdue!

      artur.winiecki.1 - 2013-02-11 14:45

Did you know that there is an old wifes tale on that side of the world, that says that if ever a black pope is elected it would mean the end of the world ;) Not being racist just saying that there is such a wifes tale in existence.

      en.gineer.359 - 2013-02-11 14:50

Notice the thumbs down? Some of them are from Christians who are taught to love one another, not be racist etc etc. How can the closest man to God be black? That's blasphemy. Goes to show how idiotic the whole system is.

      kortbroek.duplessis - 2013-02-11 15:11

I know you guys want to run the Vatican the African way. Forget it

      kortbroek.duplessis - 2013-02-11 15:18

According to many historians Jesus was neither white or black

      nico.vandermerwe.54 - 2013-02-11 15:21

According to Wikipedia there were three popes of African origin between 186 and 496AD.

      MagdaKus - 2013-02-11 15:44

Many of us thought before Pope Benedict was elected that the then new pope would be black. Who know- maybe this time round.

      trevor.myburgh.12 - 2013-02-11 18:25

He is the devil himself, Who cares if he is black or white He will burn in hell with all that follow him. Follow Christ is the answer. The one and only true Son of man (God) made flesh and dwelt amongst us. Wh...tes think they are one foot in heaven already, believe that and you have a thing coming. Don't be mistaken I still love you guys even if you are not real Wh...tes

      Suka - 2013-02-11 15:33

Hahaha! Religion Evolves? Of course it does! You have to update that bible quite frequently to make it believable. (its been done 3 times before, so why not again?)

      bafana.ndlovu.9026 - 2013-02-11 16:47

Is updating not evolutionary. Science can learn from god

That's news to me I didn't think the Pope had to walk. I thought he was carried all the time or in the Pope mobile.

  • raimund.langhans - 2013-02-11 14:48

Get an American to replace him. No one does religion i.e Christianity better than Americans.

  • tyrone.botha - 2013-02-11 15:18

This is great news... this self-righteous old man did enough damage deceiving millions about condoms and gay rights... Hope he's replaced with a real man of God, and not another mouthpiece of that archaic machine called the church.

  • Justin - 2013-02-11 15:27

Why is this getting so much front page coverage, aren't there more important things

      nico.vandermerwe.54 - 2013-02-11 19:48

Last time that happened in an election Mugabe came to power..

  • gillian.dawson.982 - 2013-02-11 15:53

Many many popes have been frail and remain in office until their death. In fact that what normall preceedes the nomination of a new pope is the previous popes demise. It is highly unusual for a pope to resign and he will be the first in centuries. I smell a rat....

  • sean.bagley.50 - 2013-02-11 15:57

First time in nearly 600 years was the last time this happened since Pope Gregory XII stepped down.Pope Benedict was a very popular pope to both the 1 billion catholics and non-catholics alike. He's done what he set out to do within the catholic church and that was to bring down an era of speculation. He also built on what Pope John Paul II left behind(John Paul II bringing down Soviet Communism that is)and whoever comes in now as his replacement should really know how to further move away from medievalism and such.

  • sliesje.evony - 2013-02-11 21:28

As a Roman Catholic, I'm sorry that a Pope has to go. Pope Benedict made this choice himself. I believe, that he was guided by God beforere he made his desition. Let us all pray for him and for his sucserror. It doesn't matter where he comes from as long as he does good for the church and Christianity as a whole. Don't make the pope a racial or political thing. If you are a Catholic you'l know that God chooses the pope trough the bishops.

  • tony.ezendam - 2013-02-12 00:05
