Dakar - Mauritanian political parties on Tuesday agreed to defer this weekend's disputed presidential vote to July 18 to allow opposition parties to contest, Senegalese Foreign Minister Cheikh Tidiane Gadio said.

"The date for the presidential elections is set at 18 July for the first round and, if need be, August 1st for the second round," Gadio said, after an agreement following six days of intensive negotiations in Dakar.

There had been a political stalemate in Mauritania since the main opposition announced a boycott of the vote set for Saturday June 6 by a military junta that last August toppled the west African country's first elected president.
