Protests hit Bahrain after ban on rallies

2012-07-14 20:20

Manama - Anti-government protesters in Bahrain have clashed with police in widespread demonstrations against moves by authorities to ban opposition rallies.

The clashes on Saturday included demonstrators hurling fire bombs and challenging riot police carrying out arrest raids in the strategic Gulf kingdom.

Bahrain says it will not approve further opposition marches, claiming they disrupt everyday life. Dozens of state-authorized opposition marches have been held, but most demonstrations are spontaneous street protests that lead to clashes.

The government's decision is likely to escalate confrontations between the Sunni monarchy and protesters led by Bahrain's Shiite majority, which claims it faces systematic discrimination.

More than 50 people have died in unrest since February 2011.

      fred.fraser.12 - 2012-07-15 05:18

You have a severely twisted and faulty view of these events. The freer world is only too happy for democracy to take hold in this up-to-now extremely violent, autocratic and chauvinistic part of the world. The imperialist thing is one of the great disservices South African academia is doing to the country. Awful and plain wrong.

      bob.karabo - 2012-07-15 13:09

You my friend fred have a severely paralyzed sense of comprehension.we(blacks, whites, indians) defeated the authoritarian figure which turned out 2 b white.they(bahrain ppl) wil also defeat the kingdom backed by u.s.a.(known imperialist who impose their will on others)im nt tryin 2 b sori 2 hav offended u.u misundastood me.

Islam means "Submitting your will to God's Will" as in Thy Will be done on earth as it is in Heaven. But, Muslims are divided and they have never set an example to mankind to live a righteous life, they are all not really believers. So what is happening in these so called Islamic States is the Wrath Of God. By The Grace Of God I was put there to dwell amongst these so called Muslims, and my life was a living Hell, Thank God in the name Of Jesus that He got me out of the depths of Darkness into light. My Humble prayers are for the victims. They are for War and not for Peace. Only God knows what they mean by Sunni and Hambali and Hannifi and Malakie. These are cursed in this world and in the hereafter grevious will be their penalty,k thus it is written in the Holy Quran.

yeah, nothing wrong wit ur faith charmaine, only men having sex wit small altar boys, other than that you guys are peachy. on a personal note, if u plan on attaching a stigma to a faith,i'd rather be called a terrorist any day than a pedophile!!!!!!

      Hoosen Essa - 2012-07-14 22:51

that is not what i am saying!! ur friend charmaine is judging a large group based on the actions of a few, i'm merely reminding u all faiths have the similar problem, just like muslims have extemist, so do christians. so if u cristians plan on attaching a stigma of violence u hear alot about on the news to a large population of a particular faith based on the actions of a few, i as muslim can do that too. and the only thing i hear about on the news is christian men having sex with altar boys!!!!! go stuff urself

      Hoosen Essa - 2012-07-14 22:54

exactly!!!!! rudi thats the points i'm passing accross. ur faith christianity also has the few people bringing u down!!! dont just pick on the muslims based on the actions of a few!!!!

Couldn't agree more with you Hoosen.

      luyolo.mhlauli.9 - 2012-07-15 07:56

This is what I was sayin Fred. Most Jewish people are hated for action committed by a few.

      fred.fraser.12 - 2012-07-15 17:56

You're a racist Luyolu, and you hold an immature anti-West core belief that distorts reality.

First thought when reading this heading was "now this is a country that appreciates motorsport!"

  • AnthonyfromAfrica - 2012-07-15 08:05

If Russia and China had not propped up this assad terrorist, democracy in The Middle East would have advanced a lot further !!

      luyolo.mhlauli.9 - 2012-07-15 08:55

Bahrain is a US ally and that is on record Asaad has no influence in Bahrain don't try and pin Bahrain lack of democracy on Asaad.

      AnthonyfromAfrica - 2012-07-15 09:33

Sure Bahrain is an US ally, but this does not mean, democracy should not come to them !!! As in North Africa, the tide is turning against dictatorships. The time that families believe they 'own' countries is the past. All over the Middle East, peoples are demanding THEIR countries back! THEY WILL SUCCEED !! Including the citizens of Bahrain !!!

      luyolo.mhlauli.9 - 2012-07-15 11:15

The US has a base in Bahrain democracy to Bahrain would mean closure of that base that is why they don't talk much nor support the protests in Bahrain.

      AnthonyfromAfrica - 2012-07-15 11:35

WHY ,would democracy in Bahrain necessarily mean the closure of that base ? The essence of the 'Arab Spring' is the popular uprisings of peoples against their dictators, especially the ones run by 'families' And ones, as we have seen happening in a number of countries, the population loses it FEAR , against its massive security forces, it is only a matter of time, and they will get what they want; A departure of their TYRANT, and a say in their own destiny !!

      fidel.mgoqi - 2012-07-15 12:25

"WHY ,would democracy in Bahrain necessarily mean the closure of that base" Because most Muslims can't wait to see the back of Americans from their lands, starting in Saudi Arabia.

      luyolo.mhlauli.9 - 2012-07-15 12:46

Well why is this family that rules Bahrain being supported by the US ?

      AnthonyfromAfrica - 2012-07-15 13:47

Fidel, Because of your silly , childish anti Western obsession, you have lost any sense of reality. A democratic Saudi Arabia or a free Bahrain does not perse have to be anti American. Their populations will do , what is best for THEM !! It has been the problem of RADICALS, for the past 60 years, THEY PRESUME SO MUCH, and are not prepared to think out of their silly little radical box, and for this reason, sooo little has come true of their "predictions" !!!!!!

      fred.fraser.12 - 2012-07-16 14:12

Al-Quaida declared war on the freer world after Saudi Arabia allowed NATO to used its bases to counter Saddam Hussein's invasion of Kuwait in 1992. Fidel agrees with the xenophobic concept of "Arab lands". Yet he has no qualms about occupying Khoi San land in Southern Africa. He also holds an immature anti-West core belief that distorts reality and leads him to support brutal unelected dictators.

  • fidel.mgoqi - 2012-07-15 10:21

Russia and China will now probably intervene in Bahrain. Democracy must be installed in Bahrain at any cost. This was NATO's greatest mistake which will be corrected thanks to Russian military.

      fred.fraser.12 - 2012-07-15 19:06

Yeah right. Russia and China are going to install democracy in Bahrain. Hahahaha! Fidel also holds an immature anti-West core belief that leads him to unwittingly support violent dictatorships and autocratic regimes.
