Bangkok - A teenager opened fire with a pistol on hundreds of his fellow pupils at a school in southern Thailand on Friday, killing at least one of them and injuring five others, officials said.

Anatcha Boonkwan, a 17-year-old senior high school pupil, began firing while students gathered on the school field to listen to a campaign for the presidency of the student body, Somporn Sawara, the school's deputy director, said in a telephone interview.

The incident took place at Pakanang school in Nakorn Srithammarat province, about 590km south Bangkok.

Somporn said a 17-year-old female student was pronounced dead upon arrival at a local hospital and one of the other five injured students was in critical condition. ]

Police Colonel Suthas Chasawadhi said Anatcha was being interrogated to determine the motive for the shooting.

The gunman's father had rushed to the school to look for his son after discovering he had taken his 9mm pistol, Somporn said.

"When the school announced that his father had come to see him, he pulled out the gun and opened fire on the crowd," Somporn said. - Sapa-AP
