Putin slams 'arrogant' world powers

Moscow - Russian Prime Minister Vladimir Putin lashed out on Monday at "arrogant world powers" as he hosted his Chinese counterpart Wen Jiabao for a regional security summit Moscow bills as a counterpart to Nato.

Russia's likely new head of state after next year's presidential elections accused Western nations of hypocrisy for backing revolutions in North African countries that previously enjoyed their strong support.

"It really is just like you said - these are arrogant world powers," Putin said in response to remarks from Iranian Foreign Minister Ali Akbar Salehi made during the Shanghai Co-operation Organisation (SCO) summit in Saint Petersburg.

"They also supported the old North African regimes," news agencies quoted Putin as saying in a clear reference to European powers and the United States.

"But what is interesting, they also supported the North African revolutions as well, the ones that overthrew the old regimes."

Russia strongly opposed Nato's air campaign in Libya and has warned the West against acting tough towards its close Soviet-era ally Syria.

The 10-year-old SCO joins Russia and China with the four ex-Soviet states of Central Asian in a loose security union that Moscow hopes to develop into a more powerful force rivalling the Brussels-based Nato bloc.

Iran is one of three nations along with Pakistan and Iran to have applied to join the organisation. Mongolia also has observer status. Monday's summit brought together mainly prime ministers from the SCO's member and observer states.

But the group made no formal decision on expansion at Monday's meeting and was short on other concrete results.

"Russia would welcome the positive review of applications to join our organisation in one form or another from any interested nation," Putin was quoted as saying.

Pakistan's application has been under review since 2006 and some analysts question the nation's actual ability to closely co-ordinate their policies on major international security issues such as Afghanistan.

Europe is not listening. Long words of socialism are clogging up brain cells, no spark. Has Europe listed Syrian government assets and frozen them? No. Has Europe listed of Syrian officials, families and connections, and expelled them? No. Has Europe listed the belongings of those officials, families and connections, and confiscated them? No. Has Europe called for the removal of Turkey from Cyprus? No. Has Europe called for the removal of Turkey from Constantinople? No. Has Europe made null the benefits of extra wives and extra wives children? No. Has Europe charged extra wives and extra wives children for their extra social benefits costs? No. Europe is not listening.

I for one would welcome an opposition to what has been the systematic dismantling of sovereign states under the guise of freedom and democracy. Natural resources is what it is all about and if the president of a country isnt willing to play ball, the US lead Nato will come in and install someone that will.. Dont beleive me? Google "Confessions of an Economic Hitman" You may just learn something...

Well said Mr Putin, we've seen the result of an unfettered, uni-polar world for the last 20 years and its not pretty. It'll only get worse if no one stands up to the US. We can only hope that a re-emergence of a multipolar world will curb America's worst excesses and that China's relative isolationism will keep her at home.

i am quite suprised because this dude is playing dangerous card.. All of the western Countries does not have the intreste of the African coutries at heart all they want is dominent ... the reason why they accepted RSA as the part of bricks Is because RSA is a developing country and RSA has Ability to conquer Africa only if South African people and the government share common goal, Our economy is very stable unemployment is not bad compared to other poor African countries like Botswana, Zambia, Malawi, Zimbabwe, Angola, Congo, Lesotho ,Tanzania, Namibia and etc.. South Africa is only powerfull Country in Southern Africa empowered by several minerals resources like Gold,Platinum,Diamond... according to previous document released by BRIcks congress, RSA has Lowest GDP Then based on their statiscs China is going to be powerful country in +20 years time followed by USA who is not member of Brick.. The question we need to ask ourselves as RSA citizen:"do we really going to benefit as part of BRICKS? or are we going to help Big countries to climb the ladder?" "I think RSA is going to be the unlock key to Southern Countries for Bricks to take African resources with this valueless paper called currency we all know currency does not favour any African countries e.g 1 USD =8 rand, I believe if African really want to raise from death they must find a better way of making business with Western countries like exchaging our asserts not asserts with dollar or euro"
