Islamabad - Archeologists have discovered rare relics of Buddha from the 3rd century at a Unesco World Heritage Site in Pakistan, officials said on Saturday.

Buddha heads made of clay were discovered in the northern area of Khanpur near the border with China, lead archeologist Abdul Samad said.

The team comprising researchers from the United States, Britain and Pakistan took several years for the discovery, Samad said.

Traces of Buddha rule were found at many placed in Pakistan's volatile north-west.

Some historic sites and statues were destroyed by the Taliban when the militants ruled the Swat district in the same region between 2007 and 2009.

Samad said researchers also found coins from the period of Kushan rulers of the Indian sub-continent. Greek emperors ruled the region during the 1st and 2nd century.
