Beirut - The International Committee of the Red Cross said on Sunday that six of its workers and a member of the Syrian Red Crescent had gone missing in northwestern Syria.

"Six ICRC members and one Syrian Red Crescent member have gone missing in an alleged kidnapping on their way back from Idlib to Damascus," the ICRC's Lebanon spokesperson Samar El Kadi told AFP.

There were no additional details on how the seven had disappeared, with Kadi saying only that the organisation was "trying to establish contact with our team".

Earlier on Sunday, Syrian state television reported that "armed terrorist gangs opened fire on an ICRC mission... and kidnapped their members".

State media said that the incident took place on the road between Sarmin and Saraqeb in the northwestern province of Idlib.

Large parts of the province are under the control of rebel groups, including jihadists, who are fighting to oust Syrian President Bashar Assad's regime in a 31-month conflict that has killed more than 115 000 people.
