Phnom Penh - A refugee has asked to return to Myanmar rather than stay in Cambodia, in the latest blow to a new Australian-run resettlement programme, a news report said on Monday.

The member of Myanmar's persecuted Rohingya community was one of only four refugees who accepted Australia's offer of relocation from a detention camp it runs on the Pacific island of Nauru.

Just three months later, he "asked the Cambodian government to go back to his home country", Interior Minister Khieu Sopheak was quoted as saying by the Cambodia Daily.

Canberra has promised Cambodia Aus$55m in aid for taking refugees from the holding centre that currently houses 1 200 migrants who were intercepted at sea before reaching Australian shores.

On August 31, Australian Foreign Minister Julie Bishop said the deal was still on, despite reports that Cambodia wanted to back out.

The International Organisation for Migration (IOM), which oversaw the transfer, initially said they were settling in well.

The IOM and Cambodian authorities said they were keeping the refugees' identities and details of their lives in Cambodia confidential, to protect their privacy.
