Russia: Female suicide bomber injures 11

Makhachkala — A female suicide bomber injured at least 11 police officers and civilians, including two children, in the southern Russian region of Dagestan on Saturday, police said.

Police spokesman Vyacheslav Gasanov said the bomber blew herself up in the central square in the provincial capital, Makhachkala. He did not give details about the injured children.

Since 2000, at least two dozen women, most of them from the Caucasus, have carried out suicide bombings in Russian cities and aboard trains and planes. All were linked to an Islamic insurgency that spread throughout Dagestan and the predominantly Muslim Caucasus region after two separatist wars in neighbouring Chechnya.

The bombers are often called "black widows" in Russia because many are the widows, or other relatives, of militants killed by security forces.

The Tsarnaev brothers suspected of carrying out last month's Boston marathon bombings, are ethnic Chechens who lived in Dagestan before moving to the United States. Tamerlan Tsarnaev, who was killed a shootout with police days after the 15 April bombings, spent six months in Dagestan in 2012.

Dagestan remains an epicentre of violence in the confrontation between radical Islamists and federal forces.

This week, a double explosion in Makhachkala killed four civilians and left 44 injured, while three security officers and three suspected militants have been killed in other incidents

Human rights groups accuse security agencies of abductions, torture and extrajudicial killings of civilians that further fuel the confrontation with Islamic radicals.

so many religious people killing others for what!!? so they can make a better world for those left behind.. ? such a waste

      Jenny Needham - 2013-05-25 13:54

Religion divides - always has and always will. Such a pity humanity has not grasped the fact that Christ redeemed all mankind in one event for all time, not connected in any way to man's acceptance of his action or requiring any form of repentance to "qualify" for it. All are made in the same image - that of a loving creator, for the purpose of delighting in the wolrd in which we live! How we waste the endless oportunites for joy and happiness!

So Jenny, you say religion divides and then you instruct everyone to believe in Jesus because he is the truth? You religiots make me laugh. Religion is the cause of the world's issue, it should be banned and those responsible for it should be put in prison for crimes against humanity.

Religion is used by the power mongers ....see who gains power and wealth as a result of conflicts. Always been the same. Always will be.

The terrorism they export many years ago is falling on them now!!!

@goyougoodthing - Christians are at least not fanatics like the Muslims. Do you suggest that everybody should worship Mohammed which is a fake?. Jesus is the only way, and everybody shall bow to him.

      juannepierre - 2013-05-25 16:39

Wait, who is Jesus and Mohammed? Are they related? Like distant cousins or something?

      goyougoodthing - 2013-05-25 16:40

Ha ha justice, there is no god, big or small g, and there certainly aren't any of his henchmen, past of present, bearded or not, on earth. The men themselves may have existed, they may have not, but what is clear is that any message they may have had about being decent has been lost in translation. Add to that the big book of lies and you have a recipe for carnage. This has played out for eons, the only things changing are the persecuted and the persecutors. Pre Constantine, Christians were tortured by pagans, after Constantine, the Christians tortured and persecuted the pagans. BTW, if he did exist, his name was Joshua and not Jesus, at least pray to the right person. And if you are looking for fanatics, it was the Christians who WALKED from Europe to the MIddle East to start wars with Muslims... and you wonder why they don't like each other.

The Russians have good experience from Afghanistan how to deal with these Muslim extremists.
