S Korea to castrate sex offender

2012-05-24 15:03

Seoul - South Korea plans to chemically castrate a sex offender convicted of repeated crimes against children, the country's first use of the punishment, officials said on Thursday.

The 45-year-old man will get an injection on Friday that lowers testosterone-producing hormones and aims to inhibit sexual impulses, Justice Ministry officials said on condition of anonymity citing department rules.

South Korea passed a law in 2010 allowing judges or a Justice Ministry panel the option of ordering chemical castration after a series of violent sexual assaults on children sparked public outrage.

The man to be castrated this week was convicted four times between 1984 and 2002 of raping or sexually molesting girls under the ages of 13, the ministry said in a separate statement. A psychiatric test has concluded the man is a paedophile and needs medication, the officials said.

He will be released from prison in July under the condition that he receive injections every three months for three years, according to the ministry.

Under the law, those who refuse or miss an injection could be returned to prison for up to seven years.

Other countries also have been moving ahead with laws allowing chemical castration for sex offenders.

Russian lawmakers in October gave first-round approval to a bill that would impose chemical castration on repeat sex offenders. Poland legalised the procedure in 2009 for offenders who rape minors or close relatives.

Already, Britain, Denmark and Sweden offer chemical castration drugs to sex offenders on a voluntary basis. In the United States, several states have laws allowing chemical castration.

Lets get that stuff for SA. I think 50 x 200 ltr drums for june alone!!

      Alan - 2012-05-24 15:27

Ha ha excellent! Is that just for one particular person?

      sabongam - 2012-05-24 16:35

Yes,this is definitely what SA needs. especially in these times of the rape demon forever rearing it's evil ugly head...

      lebo.lathane - 2012-05-24 17:26

I agree fully! SA should take a leaf from the South Korea rule book on this one. We'll not only see rape being drastically reduced, but it'll be a fitting punishment for the crime.

      matthew.healing - 2012-05-25 08:34

I can just imagine the judge in court pointing his finger at the offender and saying in a smirky voice: "Off with his head."

  • Ted - 2012-05-24 15:26

Friends of the USA. Supreme champion of human rights! If we do it here, we will be sanctioned for abuse of human rights!

      Kevin - 2012-05-24 16:14

those bastards are not humans and therefore have no rights.

      Coloured - 2012-05-24 18:29

What about the human rights of a13 year old girl that's been raped? i agree they are not human!

  • amy.mcsithole1 - 2012-05-24 15:27

We need that here in Mzansi!

  • kabobonangmolemi - 2012-05-24 15:29

    Justice at its best.

  • Lyndatjie - 2012-05-24 15:31

He can still molest the girls in other ways... its not ALWAYS about actual penetration. The only way to cure sick idiots like these is to do a frontal labotomy or shove them in a prison until they are dead!

      eugene.meyer1980 - 2012-05-24 16:15

The chemical lowers testosterone-producing hormones. I might be corrected here, but if Im correct this man should not even have any sexual urges, so he should not have the urge to be with little girls or even grownups. THere should be no sexual urges in this man. But like I say, I might be corrected here.

  • Sharon - 2012-05-24 15:34

Exactly what we need here - is anyone in the ANC listening Oh no they are all comforting Zuma's sobbing advocate!!!

  • Richard - 2012-05-24 15:40

I find it a bad choice to do it chemically. A blunt knife comes to mind as being more appropriate.

      eugene.meyer1980 - 2012-05-24 16:43

I would rather use some type of office appliance. Maybe even experiment with paper cuts, just to see if its possible. Or staple his testicals to his feet.

  • Shirley Van Heerden - 2012-05-24 15:42

nooooo!! Not chemical- SURGICAL!! Cut it off

  • Khosy - 2012-05-24 15:42

SA is in dire need of this law. Govt: the ball is in your cot.

  • Rj - 2012-05-24 15:50

    Good cut the genitals of

  • Shaun - 2012-05-24 15:52

I think a more permanent castration would be better - but I`ll settle for this in SA

  • Rob - 2012-05-24 15:57

Now tha sounds like a fair action. Now...what about a legal limit for fathering children?

  • lerato.kay.3 - 2012-05-24 16:53

    Now that's a good law

  • Phae - 2012-05-24 16:55

Brilliant, introduce it here for rape as well. Lack of testosterone drops level of aggression substantially as well, hell inject all the men who commit violent crime, there's way too many people on the planet anyway.

  • nikondaniel - 2012-05-24 16:57

  • kayb.madgun - 2012-05-24 17:04

Maybe this should apply world wide

  • ljmostert - 2012-05-24 17:04

Sex offender's genitals should be tied with a strong cable to the back of a vehicle. The offender should be given a sharp knife. The vehicle should drive just faster than the offender can run, He will only have one choice!!

      veritas.odium.paret - 2012-05-24 18:17

Sounds like one of Jigsaw's 'games' in SAW movies. I like it...

      blipsie - 2012-05-24 21:13

Now you. You have some brilliant ideas. I doubt you'll have a problem finding volunteer drivers.

      Msika - 2012-05-24 21:23

That's a funny brilliant idea, love it. LOL:)

  • kwaaito - 2012-05-24 17:05

This is what we need in SA. Or re ba tsenye rekere jaaka dikapatere

      Beverley - 2012-05-24 17:13

I will vote that in anyday!

  • jackmoz - 2012-05-24 17:33

Cut off his penis, problem solved.

      blipsie - 2012-05-24 21:13

And the cajoonies otherwise the urge will still be there.

  • mancoba.zitha.5 - 2012-05-24 17:50

maybe its abt tym sa did da same ting, baphakule letinja tekurebha

  • bongisisacurtiss - 2012-05-24 17:53

If only South Africa could adopt that law

  • thapsta - 2012-05-24 18:12

Only if SAB can be permitted to put that chemical in their alcohol. we'd have peaceful parties where ladies can wear mini skirts and no babies dumped in door steps and rubbish bins and ohhh aids will be low as well. power to the non drinkers.

  • eddie.serane - 2012-05-24 18:44

If SA can order this chemical ,rapists can be reduced

  • Msika - 2012-05-24 20:14

Great!! Now, that's what true justice is. SA should follow suite, and legalise the procedure.

  • blipsie - 2012-05-24 21:11

Too bad SA cant just cut through the marshmallow and sommer do a proper permanent castration. In fact I think once a perpetrator has even one victim, by all means chop off the bits that bug him bit by bit every day. Should make future offenders think twice.

  • tenza.zwelie - 2012-05-25 00:05

i think it must be applied even in,the rape rate is shocking ova here.

  • Preshen - 2012-05-25 08:14

    Move it or loss it

  • Mpho Nkoane - 2012-05-25 09:25

SA should definitely follow suit, we cant continue living like barbarians!!
