Security tightened at Afghan base

London - Britain's defence secretary says security has been increased at the main British base in Afghanistan after a major Taliban raid.

Attackers dressed in US Army uniforms infiltrated Camp Bastion on Friday, killing two US marines and destroying six American fighter jets.

Hammond told lawmakers that the attackers were not able to get near accommodation housing thousands of US and British troops - including helicopter pilot Prince Harry.

Hammond said Monday that "immediate measures have been taken to enhance the protection of the base". He said he could not go into detail for security reasons.

Hammond said attacks like the killing of two British soldiers by an Afghan local police officer on Saturday would not derail the process of training Afghan security forces so UK troops can leave by 2014.
