Ranallah - A Palestinian who was shot and injured by Israeli troops last week during a confrontation in a West Bank village, on Monday died of his injuries, medical sources on both sides said.

Rashad Deeb was shot and injured along with his two brothers in the early hours of March 27 during an incident in Rammun village, 10km northeast of Ramallah.

A soldier was also lightly injured during the incident.

Deeb was taken to Shaarei Tzedek hospital in Jerusalem but died of his injuries early on Monday, Israeli and Palestinian medical sources said.

"He arrived in critical condition and was operated on, but he died at 04:00 this morning," a spokesperson for the hospital said.

A Palestinian ambulance official said he had been contacted by the hospital to retrieve the body and was awaiting permission to enter Israel.

The incident occurred when the three brothers had heard someone moving around outside their home during the night and had gone out to confront them, believing they were thieves, witnesses and Palestinian security sources said.

But the "thieves" turned out to be Israeli soldiers working undercover, who were dressed to look like Palestinians and opened fire after one of the Palestinians attacked them with a knife, they said.

The Israeli military merely said one of its soldiers had been attacked by a knife-wielding Palestinian but did not comment on whether the troops were under cover. A spokesperson said the circumstances of the incident were under investigation.

Another day for Israel . Let's go kill some Palestinians

Are you implying that this was a malicious attack? I think it would be fair to call it either an accident or unfortunate and regrettable from both sides- but not overtly politically motivated

Another death to be blamed on the pathetic and murderous ways of the Palestinians leadership. Whilst our ANC realised very fast into our struggle that violence will not work and will not lead to a free and democratic South Africa – the Palestinians have yet to bring a Madiba figure along to teach them that only peaceful activity (and not terrorism) will lead them to statehood.

Agreed we need a peaceful resolution.. but it needs to come from both sides.. Its not just Palestinians doing the killing, its also the Israelis that are killing Palestinians. If it were only Plaestinains doing the killing then there would be no Israelites left

Patrick you have to find the right principles first or there's no direction to the leadership. Wanting to destroy Israel on the false principle that Israelis stole Palestinian land will never lead to peace.

Why don't you report on the barrage of rockets fired everyday into Israel from Gaza for a change? Endangering the lives of hundreds of innocent civilians, even children. Guess that's not news worthy, yet the death of one Palestinian terrorist is. What was the soldier supposed to do? Stand there and get stabbed to death?

Just goes to show...never show up to a gun fight with a knife. The guys with guns will kill you with regular monotony.

How about promoting less violence rather than more. There's too much violence in our world, and South Africa is one of the most violent countries in the world. Nothing to be proud of that's for sure.
