Stockholm - A Swedish court has sentenced a 54-year-old Swede of Rwandan origin to life in prison for participating in the genocide in Rwanda, where hundreds of thousands of Tutsis were systematically killed.

The Stockholm District Court convicted Stanislas Mbanenande of genocide, saying he was involved in the slaying of thousands of people in the Kibuye district in western Rwanda between April and June 1994.

The court said Mbanenande had an informal role as leader among extremist Hutus in Kibuye and was involved in arranging several massacres, including those in the Nyamishaba school, a catholic church, the hotel Home St Jean and Gatwaro stadium. The court says he also shot at people personally with an automatic rifle.

Mbanenande denied the charges. It wasn't immediately clear whether he would appeal.
