Geneva - A plane bound for the English city of Bristol made an emergency return to Zurich on Monday after smoke leaked into its cockpit from a malfunctioning oven, Swiss airline Helvetic Airways said.

A spokesperson for Helvetic Airways told AFP a faulty oven in the plane's galley was to blame for the incident on board the Fokker 100, which was forced to return to Zurich some 30 minutes after take-off.

The airline did not say how many people were onboard, but the short-range Fokker 100 can carry around 100 passengers.

Switzerland's air accident investigation body has opened a probe into the incident.

Helvetic Airways, founded in 2003, is a small European airline with a fleet of six Fokker 100s and one Airbus 319-100.
