Syria: Heavy gunfire in heart of Damascus

2012-07-17 12:39

Damascus - Heavy machinegun fire rocked Sabaa Bahrat square in central Damascus on Tuesday, witnesses said.

"Machinegun fire was heard in the Sabaa Bahrat square, and members of the security forces, armed with Kalashnikovs, ran across the square," site of the country's Central Bank, one witness said.

Shooting was also reported in Baghdad Street, a main road near the square.

Two entry points into the square were briefly closed, and then reopened to traffic.

The shots were fired as fighters in anti-regime neighbourhoods of the capital clashed violently with the army, while regime forces deployed helicopters to fire into several districts.

Meanwhile a column of smoke could be seen on Tuesday billowing from the Midan district near the centre of Damascus, which has been pounded by regime troops since Monday.

So sorry for the "News24 anti Western ( meaning anti democracy Club" but here we are having a repeat of gaddafi pre abattoir !! This assad 's Monster days are numbered !! Let's hope they can find a high tree, so while the Syrians dance in the streets, they can see the dog that terrorized them for soo many years, and murdered soo many of their family and friends !!!

      pieriewaaier.zooms - 2012-07-17 15:45

@ Fidel. So you quite clearly have facts at your disposal not gleaned from newspaper and other media reports to put you in a position of objectivity with which to dispel the gist of the news articles we have to read to form an opinion. If so, please publish those facts (not hearsay but hard facts) so that we all can benefit from that.If you can't then of course you are the gullible and stupid one for all to see and value your contribution to this very tragic debate.

      fidel.mgoqi - 2012-07-17 15:55

Please try and keep up with your meds. And after you settle down, take a course in remedial reading. It will help you understand better what others are actually saying. Was that post of mine below too difficult for you?

      gerhard.kress.3 - 2012-07-17 16:02

Fidel saw the Gadhafi story as it developed and ended. To this day she is on Brother Leader's side. Screw the people that are now voting for the first time.

      Greg - 2012-07-17 16:26

I hope Assad wipes the floor with terrorist rebel scum

      AnthonyfromAfrica - 2012-07-17 16:55

Greg, It is a bit late for that , the ONLY floor that is going to be wiped, is that of the Damascus abbatoir, after this assad dog, made a mess of it !!!

I'm not looking forward to the end. It's likely to be ugly. So unnecessary. Assad could have been a true, great leader, leading Syria to a democratic, humane future. Instead it's been a nightmare, and his end is likely to be terrible.

  • gerhard.kress.3 - 2012-07-17 14:22

Do you think this is good enough for Fidel? EYEWITNESS: A Syrian refugee from Homs tells The British Foreign Secretary William Hague, "there was slaughtering of the people by Al Assad forces using knifes" at a Syrian refugee camp in Jordan. (Mohammad Hannon, AP)

      fidel.mgoqi - 2012-07-17 14:35

Both sides are implicated in the killing of civilians yet you are deluding yourself with a narrative in which virtually all the killing is the work of the army. You are truly stupid and gullible. Why is it easy for your to swallow news articles at face value. How do you know if this is not staged.

      AnthonyfromAfrica - 2012-07-17 14:38

Gerhard No, Fidel wants to see the knife, with blood and all, and finger prints !! I actually feel sorry for Fidel and that patrick, for 18 months, Syria gave them a platform, to share with so many their silly and childish anti Western feelings, and now the end is in sight !! But we will probably see them in Iran !! Shame, all along they were right with one fact : The road to Tehran runs through Damascus !!!!! But, Stttttttttttt

      fidel.mgoqi - 2012-07-17 14:53

Your historical knowledge must be so good that you know something entirely unique and undiscovered. I suggest you contact a major publisher straight away.

      gerhard.kress.3 - 2012-07-17 15:20

It really is quite easy. Time is up for Assad. It is only Fidel that can't come to terms with it. Assad and his ilk are just like the african chiefs of 400 years ago selling their subjects into slavery for glass pearls. 95% of african countries are still ruled by politicians like that. Zuma being a good example. As long as africans vote for corrupt politicians they will again be colonised because their presidents sell them out to foreign powers. Nothing new in Africa as long as you share your bed with dictators.

      fidel.mgoqi - 2012-07-17 15:32

You are as dumb as you write! You moron see how off-based you are.

      AnthonyfromAfrica - 2012-07-17 16:59

Mr Tosser, Gerhard makes a hundred times more sense , than you can ever dream off !!!

      AnthonyfromAfrica - 2012-07-17 18:12

Mr Tosser in top form; Racism, Hatred, BS, and off course Filth !!!

  • boom.baracus - 2012-07-17 16:36

Fidel, you little Jew-hater. Stop insulting people and dealing with the facts. You have brought no credible facts despite all your ranting. Give us credible references for your accusation that there is a significant proportion of the over 16,000 civilians that have been killed by civilian forces. Fool.

      fidel.mgoqi - 2012-07-17 17:02

A Jew-hater is no longer someone that hates Jews, but someone that the Talmudic Jews hate. This is also the last time I shall ever respond to you, your lucky to get this short reply.

      boom.baracus - 2012-07-17 17:17

You reply my little Jew-hater, is complete garbage (reflecting your mental status) and does not answer my question at all. I have noticed that you find it very difficult to answer questions when they don't suit you. You disgust me.

      AnthonyfromAfrica - 2012-07-17 17:59

Mr. Tosser.1426. I realize reading was never your favourite subject, but Boom DID ask a question to your boss.

  • luyolo.mhlauli.9 - 2012-07-17 17:51

Will it be called a massarce when the army responds accordingly ?

      AnthonyfromAfrica - 2012-07-17 18:03

Luyolo, When a soldier of assad's terrorist army knocks on someone's door, and asked the owner for his ID, and when produced, blows this guy's brains out, and than moves to the next house, and there is a same procedure, YES, THAT is called a massacre !! Any further questions ??

      fidel.mgoqi - 2012-07-17 18:34

If they have arms they are no longer civilians and should be targeted.

      AnthonyfromAfrica - 2012-07-17 18:58

Well, I know you are not thge brightest here on this site, but have you ever heard of ; CIVIL WAR ?????? And that in a civil war, BOTH sides can carry arms ?? You are just totally p.ssed off , that you can see with your own eyes, that your platform, you have been using, or should I say misusing, is dissapearing!!!!!!

      fidel.mgoqi - 2012-07-17 19:10

I was responding to Luyolo, porkhcop! If you don't understand that, you really deserve to be patronised.

      luyolo.mhlauli.9 - 2012-07-17 19:12

I meant when the army responds to who ever is firing at them
