Syria army in major assault on Dara'a

Beirut - At least six people were killed, including a young girl, as Syrian forces on Tuesday launched a major assault on Herak, a town in the southern province of Dara'a, a monitoring group said.

The girl was shot dead by a sniper, while at least five soldiers were killed in clashes with members of the rebel Free Syrian Army (FSA), the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said.

"Large military forces, including tanks and armoured troop carriers, launched an assault on Herak. Explosions and heavy machine gun fire was heard," the Britain-based monitoring group added, citing residents.

The Local Co-ordination Committees, a network of activists on the ground, denounced the heavy shelling of Herak, which it said targeted houses and mosques, as well as a search operation that saw troops burn homes, loot and carry out arrests.

Elsewhere, "tanks and troop carriers besieged the locality of Tibet al-Imam," in central Hama province, the LCC said.

In Maaret al-Numan, a town in the northwestern province of Idlib, a 23-year-old man was shot dead by sniper fire, according to the Observatory. Security forces also killed two others in Idlib.

After fleeing the battered Baba Amr district in the flashpoint central city of Homs, the rebels regrouped in nearby Rastan, which according to the Observatory and activists came under artillery fire on Sunday and Monday.

"The regime is going to try and increase the pressure on Rastan, there are preparations under way to carry out an assault because it is clear that the city is not under its control," said Rami Abdel Rahman, who heads the Observatory.

Rastan, bombed intermittently since February 5, is located on the motorway linking Damascus to northern Syria.

Qusayr, another town in Homs province mainly under rebel control, was also targeted by heavy bombardment, according to Anas Abu Ali, an official with the FSA.

      goyougoodthing - 2012-03-06 19:11

How can you say that Africa, you never have any proof, just slander for people you have never met. It's all rather sad. Construct an argument, please, for once.

      goyougoodthing - 2012-03-06 19:14

Africa, the CIA has been involved in the goings on in the middle east since before Afghanistan was a rogue state. Back when they were still friends the CIA was already doing all sorts in the region and others to instigate instability, it's their job. As they are not actually part of the US government, they have carte blanche really. But then I don't expect these truths to matter to you.

      goyougoodthing - 2012-03-06 19:16

Frank the one is not dependent on the other. I didn't say hooray a little girl is dead, it is very sad, but I commented on the way the CIA operates, but maybe you would rather not think about that?

      Anthony - 2012-03-06 19:29

Goodfornothing , Don't be silly, how can you one have a 'constructive" conversation, when someone talks such garbage. All you do, is to cover up the autrocities of that BUTCHER. Even China can see the cruelty of that MURDERER, It is just you and a few of your silly radical friends left, that are the only ones protecting a TYRANT, just because you dont like the USA IT IS SOO PATHETICALLY CHILDISH !!!!

      Leon - 2012-03-06 20:53

      goyougoodthing - 2012-03-06 22:04

I don't dislike the USA, I don't like the CIA. There is a difference. I think the big picture is being missed or intentionally overlooked. If you all stopped playing army the grown ups could make friends.

      Anthony - 2012-03-07 08:13

@Leon Alberts, It is dificult to debate anything with some of these that comment here. Their only missioin is to spew out their anti Western believes. For the rest, they got little or nothing to say !!!

Highly unlikely soldiers would have shot a little girl. The perpetrators of this hideous crime are most probably part of a "death squad" who's soul purpose is to shoot on sight, causing as much hate and destabilization as possible.

      nowicki1 - 2012-03-06 20:14

Read the article before making a fool of yourself.

      nowicki1 - 2012-03-06 20:18

But yeah, you can, and do repeatedly, a lot better.

  • Anthony - 2012-03-06 20:33

Lets hope the Syrians will NEVER EVER read these posts, where some try to protect the BUTCHER FROM DAMASCUS !!! Africa has already lost Tunesia, Egypt and Libya as friends. At this rate we will have no one left !!!!

      goyougoodthing - 2012-03-06 22:06

And what awesome friends they were. I thought they were also run by terrorists or am I mistaken? Are they friends of South Africa or butchers? Or do butchers only apply to certain countries and not others. Is this a selective description based on what is convenient?
