Syria border fighters may be Qaeda

Moscow - Russia said on Wednesday that militants who have seized control of posts on Syria's border with Turkey may be allies of al-Qaeda.

Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov expressed doubt over claims that border posts captured from government forces on the Syrian side of the frontier had been seized by the rebel Free Syrian Army.

"According to some information, these checkpoints were seized not by the Free Syrian Army at all - whatever one thinks about it - but by groups directly linked with al-Qaeda," Lavrov said at a news conference with his Cypriot counterpart.

"We are double-checking this," said Lavrov, suggesting that Western nations should not rush to celebrate territorial gains by opponents of President Bashar al-Assad's government.

"If such processes - the seizure of territory by terrorists - are supported by our partners, then we would like to receive an answer to the question of what their position on Syria is, what they are trying to achieve in that country," he said.

Moscow has repeatedly accused Western nations of encouraging Assad's opponents and said they must put more pressure on rebels to stop the violence in Syria, warning that some of those fighting government forces are extremist militants.

Lavrov's remarks about the border gates came after he accused the United States on Wednesday of trying to justify terrorism against the Syrian government.

Russia has faced vehement Western criticism for vetoing three UN Security Council resolutions intended to increase pressure on Assad to stop 16 months of violence.

Russia its time you have to send troop to Assad the western vampires are supporting the al-qaeda

Keith wants Assad to gas Syrians who are trying to free themselves from decades of oppression at the hands of the Assad family. So it's no surprise that he wants the neo-Soviet Russian regime to assist the unelected dictator in his attempt to hold onto unelected power.

Either the Russians government are the dumnest ever, or they believe everbody else is the stupid! From the beginning of this uprising MANY, including Kofi Annan , have been warning that this Syrian uprising will in time , get all terrorist groups involved. Well, with this one Annan was right. The sooner this assad terrorist is out, the Syrians can start looking forward to a future without TERROR !!!

At the same time, they continue to claim that they are fighting al Qaeda in Afghanistan, Iraq, Pakistan and Somalia. This might seem like a contradictory and confused foreign policy however, it is classical Machiavellian policy at play and nobody plays Machiavellian politics better than Western imperialists. War criminal, Henry Kissinger, summed it up many years ago when he said: “We do not have permanent friends or permanent enemies – we only have permanent interests.”

Stop being soo pathethically childish with your non stop 'quotes' of 40/50 years ago. Maybe if you start listening what is being said in 2012, you might get a slight understanding of what is happening in Syria !!

Fidel's immature anti-West beliefs again distorting reality. There's little to no value in debating with him as it all comes down to one obsessive, immature belief: the West is evil.

  • ghengis.khan.585 - 2012-07-25 21:39

Exactly, some sense in all the mess. Russia please start being more verbal and exposing these lies.

      fidel.mgoqi - 2012-07-25 21:55

As long as truth is being spoken, Russia will have those lying western rats on the defensive. Because truth doesn't need any spinning or back tracking. This allows Sergey Lavrov, the master diplomat, to dance circles around the Western diplomatic players who are stuck in reverse.

      fred.fraser.12 - 2012-07-25 22:25

According to Fidel, with is immature anti-West core beliefs, the neo-Communist Russian regime is going to bring democracy to the Middle East. He's on record stating this (in the Bahrain thread). This is how delusional his view of reality is. Unwittingly he is supporting the slaughter, detention, rape and torture of tens of thousands of Muslims by an unelected dictator who just 12 of the 166 countries on Earth believe is a legitimate leader.

      fred.fraser.12 - 2012-07-25 22:29

Ghengis too, with his delusional anti-west beliefs, is hoping the neo-Soviet Russian regime, which literally is arming Assad, will bring peace and justice to Syria. The very regime that is retarded, a late developer, having only recently come out of decades of Communism, itself one of the most brutal and unjust forms of government ever devised by man. Putin and Lavrov are aiding and abetting Assad's slaughter, detention, rape and torture of tens of thousands of Syrians WHO WANT TO VOTE.

      ghengis.khan.585 - 2012-07-26 08:53

Please can you show some proof of tens of thousands of people being raped by the Assad government. The only killing that has been done is the killing of terrorists that take up arms against the government. There is no government in the world that would not do this if it was in the same situation. If you cannot show proof of these rapes of tens of thousands then it goes to show that every post is a propaganda of lies you keep spitting out.

      fidel.mgoqi - 2012-07-26 09:42

Gengis, this fred is actually cliche-generating software that works by randomly taking words from the article, like 'Assad' or 'Rebels' and then placing them into a commonly employed syntaxic string. You are wasting your time responding to this thing.

      fred.fraser.12 - 2012-07-26 17:55

Ghengis, like you're misreading reality and what is really happening in Syria, you're misreading what I wrote. Here it is again: Assad has slaughtered, detained, raped and tortured tens of thousands of Muslims. I did not say Assad has raped tens of thousands of Syrians. An UNELECTED dictator is not a legitimate government. It's sad that you think it is. It's sad that you support the killing, detaining, torture and rape of tens of thousands of Syrians by an UNELECTED dictator WHO WANT TO VOTE for their leaders. You are part of the problem, not the solution.

      fred.fraser.12 - 2012-07-26 17:56

      Muslims = Syrians

      fred.fraser.12 - 2012-07-26 17:59

In Fidel's world, made fake by a "binary" belief in which the West is evil, the rest not, those who differ from his view are fake. It's highly immature. It is the same as George Bush's "you're either with us or against us" view.
