Syria prepares for final push on Homs

2012-02-28 22:36

Beirut - The Syrian military has sent elite reinforcements from a unit commanded by President Bashar Assad's brother Maher to the besieged rebel city of Homs, an activist on the ground said on Tuesday.

Hadi Abdullah of the Syrian Revolution General Commission told AFP on the telephone from the city in central Syria that Fourth Armoured Division troops had taken up positions with their armour around the rebel stronghold of Baba Amr in Homs.

The reinforcements were a probable prelude to a final assault, he said.

The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, meanwhile, said 31 people were killed in the country on Tuesday, including six soldiers, with the heaviest losses in Homs which the regime shelled for a 25th straight day.

Access to the city has now been completely sealed off, according to several commanders of the rebel Free Syrian Army. They said the regular army had also destroyed a tunnel.

I don't care what the dark Russian and self-centered detached Chinese regimes think. The Chinese need the US and Europe as much as the latter need the Chinese. They won't do anything in retaliation. And the Russian regime is dark. We shouldn't allow dark people to determine our actions. They're likely to be replaced soon anyway. The Arab League, EU and US together must act, and act now. We have the technology to put Assad in retreat, pick off his tanks and military resources, protect the people of Homs and other cities and towns. We must act. We cannot allow this heartless, cruel regime to slaughter more people and, worse, stay in power. It is inhuman, goes against the essence of who we are as human beings.

@Fred, It seems like you don't understand how world politics work. Yes the US and French will campaign against Syria, but only because elections are nearby, that's about it, the is no incentive for them to get involved in Syria. What does Syria have to offer? The west have nothing to gain from Syria, whether at peace or war, absolutely nothing to gain. As far as China and Russia goes, they are the untouchables, no Western country shall dare declare sanctions against them, that's why China insist on buying Iranian oil without any reprieve.

      Matthew Nowicki - 2012-02-29 08:39

The west does have something very important to gain by getting rid of Assad. One less powerful enemy of Israel and the US, and one less ally of Iran.

      Fred - 2012-02-29 13:33

Matthew, should read: The world has something very important to gain by getting grid of the oppressive, cruel, unelected Assad regime.

      WTF did you just say?

  • Michael - 2012-02-29 06:29

And What exactly do you mean by "Dark" and "Dark people" freddie? This is an African site and that is stupidly offensive. go play on another site with your illiterate comments.

      michael.a.devilliers - 2012-02-29 07:48

Um... he refered to Russia people as dark. Nothing to do with skin colour or anything. Learn to read.

      Stephen - 2012-02-29 08:08

yeah! what does he mean by dark? Darth Vader, the dark side? Their just thugs.

      Greg - 2012-02-29 08:52

Russia is the our last hope for fighting against Zionism. He is 100% sovereign and answers to nobody. Isreal is not much different than Nazi Germany, yet we complain when Iran is building nuclear energy? Isreal (The Zionists) are the real terrorists

      Fred - 2012-02-29 13:43

Greg, you've allowed yourself to be duped by the oppressive, unelected dictatorships of the Middle East who have been using the Palestinians to distract their populations from their disenfranchisement, and to hold onto power. Israel's nuclear weapons are entirely defensive. These unelected dictatorships (which are thankfully disappearing fast) have threatened her existence from day one, notwithstanding that the Israelites were in the area as long as the other tribes, and the minuscule size of the country relative to the vast so-called Arab lands. If these oppressive dictatorships really were interested in helping the Palestinians, don't you think they would have given what would amount to a tiny piece of land to them? Obviously yes. The Jewish people were nearly exterminated in the biggest attempt at genocide and ethnic cleansing the world has ever experienced. Six million killed. Your statement is completely ignorant, racist and vicious. It's stupid.

      Michael - 2012-02-29 15:32

The Russian regime or the Russian people De villiers? Learn to read.

"The Jewish people were nearly exterminated in the biggest attempt at genocide and ethnic cleansing the world has ever experienced. Six million killed. ". You just HAD to play the Holocaust card didn't you Fred? As if we should still feel sorry for them. Ten million Russians also died during the war, these people were also victim to the Nazi regime, I dont see you still mourning that loss... "Israel's nuclear weapons are entirely defensive". who the **** told you that nonsense? Do you believe EVERYTHING you want to hear Fred? Look up the difference between Zionism and Judaism. Research into Zionist influence and the Zionist lobby in the US. Research "the attack on USS Liberty" and you will see the tactics used by Mossad to influence Americas foreign policy. oh and Fred, you know very little so please stop acting like you know it all, just because some douchbag in a suit told you that's how it is.

      Anthony - 2012-02-29 22:20

@Matthew, Well Fred certainly does not talk garbage like you do. If I was you, I would not give this away for nothing, try and sell this crap to some conspiracy site, maybe you will be able to buy a cd for the week-end !!!!

      Fred - 2012-03-01 00:09

Matthew, the death of six million human beings by attempted genocide is not "a card" to be played or not. But I understand to a teenager or someone in post-adolescence it may appear this way. As you mature I expect you'll understand more what this really means. In the meantime you really should be more careful with your conclusions, and certainly your declarations on public websites because your immaturity and wrong conclusions are glaring. This is not a blog about the deaths of Russians in the second world war. And the deaths of ten million Russians doesn't cancel out the attempted genocide of the Jewish race. In your immaturity and growing, but current lack of worldly experience, you're believing everything you're reading, unfortunately from the wrong, dark sources. Meaning the UNELECTED oppressive regimes of the Middle East who have been abusing the Palestinians for decades. Thankfully this is coming to an end now. It's disappointing to me that you'd be supporting the forces of darkness, instead of the light. There's still time.

  • Greg - 2012-02-29 08:49

GO Syria! Get rid of those terrorists trying to overthrow your presidency. Its funny how unlike Lybia, Homs is the ONLY city in Syria that is in turmoil, other city's are not up in arms and are peacefully making change. USA, UN are funding the terrorists they fought against in Afghanistan to help overthrow the president..

      Anthony - 2012-02-29 11:47

@Greg, Maybe if you would for a moment stop watching this propaganda station RT, or some dumb conspiracy sights, you would not make such a silly comment. There are uprisings all over Syria, yes even , in parts of Damascus !!!! Maybe try for 30 minutes BBC or SKY, they both got brave reporters spread over Syria. ( I promise I won't tell anyone, you watched BBC and Sky, PROMISE!!!!)

      Anthony - 2012-02-29 12:28

@Greg, Its amazing , how some can abuse their freedom, and use it to support a murderers dictator !!!! Start looking for your next hero, this one, will either accept asylum in another country, or he will hitch a lift on the back of a bakkie !!!!!

      Fred - 2012-02-29 13:45

Another strange, stupid statement from you Greg. South Africans don't take kindly to oppressive regimes who have been in power for 48 years, without allowing their populations to vote.
