Syria toll reaches 40 000

2012-11-22 15:53

Beirut - At least 40 000 people have been killed in violence across Syria since the outbreak of an anti-regime revolt in March last year, the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said on Thursday.

"At least 28 026 civilians, 1 379 defectors, 10 150 soldiers and 574 unidentified people have been killed in Syria in the past 20 months," said Observatory director Rami Abdel Rahman.

Civilians represented the vast majority of the 40 129 people killed, said the Observatory, which includes non-military people who have taken up arms against President Bashar Assad's regime in that figure.

The Observatory did not include thousands of people who have gone missing in the conflict, some thought to be in detention and others slain. It also excluded thousands of dead pro-regime militiamen.

The Britain-based Observatory relies on a network of activists, lawyers and medics at military and civilian hospitals inside Syria for its information.

The uprising began as pro-reform protests inspired by the Arab Spring but transformed into an armed insurgency after the government began brutally crushing demonstrations.

Most rebels, like the population, are Sunni Muslims in a country dominated by a minority regime of Alawites, an offshoot of Shi'ite Islam.

I guess Arabs only squeal when their own kind are killed by non Arabs IE if terrorists are blotted out like last few days but is okay for them to kill each other?

. The Syrians have been paying a heavy price for freedom, for the last FIFTY YEARS, and than retreat, untill the next uprising! But, not so this time, as there is no return to the status quo. The Syrians will be on the streets, until they got THEIR country back. AND SUCCEED THEY WILL !!!!!!

It's good to hear that Zaahid. Now if only the volume was louder than when even a peep about Israel is mentioned. After all, tens of thousands of innocent Muslims are being slaughtered and maimed by Assad and his brother. Same goes for when Jihadists blow themselves up.

      fred.fraser.12 - 2012-11-22 18:25

It's so stark and revealing isn't it, the tiny number of posts from Muslims on this story, relative to the huge volume on the Israeli stories. What a tragic delusion many Muslims are under. It reveals how effective the unelected dictators have been in distracting the attention of Muslims from their abuses. Wake up Muslim people! You're being played by these dictators. Wake up! They're slaughtering your community and abusing the Palestinians.

Because he's a communist so murder is fine so long as you are anti-west. He clearly does not care about human rights, as he loves Castro and Stalin and wants to transform our countries to be more like theirs.

Dear world. Last week I saw british Muslim rioting in London against Israel' killing of 100 Palestinians of whome around 60 were Hamas militants. Why are these British Muslims not rioting and going mad against Syria? 40000!!! Do they believe that it's ok for Muslims to kill Muslims or do they just hate Israel more than they love their own brethren... Hypocrites much?.

      eugene.lourens.18 - 2012-11-22 20:04

Mr moses when I was buzy reading this I was thinking exactly the same thing. Why are they not in arms over the fact that more than 40 000 of their own have been killed.

When will this end? It is no longer what people regard it as violence. It is war and those are True casualities of war. One can also clarify it as a revolution.
