Bangkok - A Thai Buddhist monk plans on meditating himself to death, local media reported said on Wednesday.

The 65-year-old abbot at a monastery in Chaiyaphum province said he was not committing suicide but rather it was just his time to die.

The Bangkok Post reported that monk Luang Pu Pim planned to accomplish the feat by climbing into a coffin Tuesday and beginning to meditate.

He told his followers he would be dead by Thursday, and to place the coffin next to an empty space at which point it would self immolate, it said.

The coffin has holes in it so the monk can breathe while he meditates.

His final lesson to his followers was that in order to gain wisdom, one must have awareness and that all life must come to an end.
