Bangkok — Thai police have arrested a taxi driver accused of killing an American expatriate in a fight over a taxi fare worth less than $2.

Police Lieutenant Colonel Teerayut Maiplaeng says the 32-year-old taxi driver confessed that he stabbed Troy Lee Pilkington with a machete on Bangkok's Sukhumvit Road on Saturday.

Teerayut said on Monday that the 51-year-old Pilkington worked for American machinery company Caterpillar and had lived in Thailand for at least three years.

The driver, Chidchai Utmacha, told investigators that Pilkington accused him of rigging the taxi's meter and then refused to pay the fare of $1.60. He claimed the American threw coffee at him when he asked for the money.

Chidchai is facing charges of murder and carrying a weapon in public without reasonable cause.
