Bangkok - A boat believed to be smuggling Myanmar nationals to southern Thailand capsized, drowning 12, police said on Monday.

"We have found 12 bodies, six women and six men," Marine Police Lieutenant-Colonel Nirat Chuauythit said from Ranong province, 460km south-west of Bangkok.

It capsized in high waves late on Friday while passing Koh Chang Island, off Ranong.

Marine police saved 26 of the passengers and the captain of the boat. The surviving Myanmar nationals have been charged with illegal entry while the captain was charged with human trafficking.

"They were probably heading to Phuket Island to find work," Nirat said.

There are more than 2 million Myanmar citizens working in Thailand, about half of whom lack legal work papers.
