bangkok - Thailand's Transport Ministry is considering a plan to require all taxi operators to install closed circuit television (CCTV) cameras in their cabs to monitor drivers and passengers, media reports said on Monday.

The cameras are intended to boost the safety of passengers and could be used to collect evidence against drivers who violate laws, Transport Minister Chadchart Sittipunt was quoted as saying by the Bangkok Post.

"If a closed-circuit television camera is installed in a cab, it will function like an aeroplane's black box data storage device, as images and voices of people will be recorded," he said. "This will help authorities know what is happening in the taxis."

Under the plan, all 100 000 metered taxis registered in Bangkok would be fitted with the cameras.
