Paris - A third child of African origin died on Monday after a weekend accident that saw a group of children fall into an unguarded pond in a northeastern suburb of Paris where they had been placed in temporary accommodation by French social services.

The girl, aged eight, died on Monday morning, and a fourth child was battling for survival, a source close to the case said.

Two boys, aged three and five, died after Saturday's tragedy at an industrial estate near Saint-Ouen-l'Aumone where they fell into a pond near a cheap hotel where they had been lodged with their mothers.

The children had been housed there temporarily after their three single mothers, all from African countries, had contacted an emergency service for families in urgent need of somewhere to stay.

Prosecutor Yves Jannier said the children were probably watching fish in the pond "when one of them fell into the water and the others followed suit trying to stage a rescue".
