Paris - A gunman shot and wounded three people on a train travelling between Amsterdam and Paris on Friday, before being overpowered by passengers, a spokeperson for French state rail company SNCF said.

The incident happened near Arras in northern France shortly after 16:00 GMT and the gunman was arrested when the train stopped at the town's station, the spokesperson told AFP.

French Interior Minister Bernard Cazeneuve was heading to Arras in the wake of the incident, his ministry said.
