Time for nation building in US - Obama

2012-05-05 17:00

Washington - US President Barack Obama on Saturday called for renewed focus on "nation-building here at home" after a decade of war in Afghanistan, as he prepared to hit the campaign trail in Ohio and Virginia.

In his weekly address, Obama recapped his trip earlier in the week to Afghanistan, where he signed a strategic partnership agreement with President Hamid Karzai and marked the anniversary of the killing of Osama bin Laden.

"The tide of war has turned in Afghanistan. We have broken the Taliban's momentum. We've built strong Afghan security forces. We have devastated al-Qaeda's leadership," Obama said.

'Fair shot'

"After more than a decade of war, it is time to focus on nation building here at home," he said, highlighting his vision of an economy that offers a "fair shot" to everyone - especially US troops heading home from Afghanistan.

"What kind of country will they come back to? Will it be a country where a shrinking number of Americans do really well while a growing number barely get by?" the Democratic incumbent asked.

"Or will it be a country where everyone gets a fair shot, everyone does their fair share, and everyone plays by the same set of rules - a country with opportunity worthy of the troops who protect us?"

Obama took a thinly veiled stab at his Republican foes, saying: "I don't think we should prioritise things like more tax cuts for millionaires while cutting the kinds of investments that built a strong middle class."

"That's why I've called on Congress to take the money we're no longer spending at war, use half of it to pay down our debt, and use the other half to rebuild America."

Obama first official campaign rallies on Saturday will be in Ohio and Virginia - battleground states that could be key to his hopes of winning a second term in November.

The shame is that they have lost the war in Afghanistan and that they are coming back home with their tails between their legs! Don't believe me? Well, why don't we interview each and every one of them and get it first-hand from them.

      fred.fraser.12 - 2012-05-05 18:14

Still living in a delusional dream-land Muhammed. Al-Quaida is decimated, and the Taliban is severely weakened. Afghans will have security forces 350,000 strong to protect them from the crazed terrorists you like to support. And they'll be backed by the US. What's more, though, is that two million girls are in school. Ten years ago not one was, thanks to your heroes.

      Muhammed - 2012-05-05 18:31

@fred.fraser.12?: What you relate is evidence of victimization of media propaganda. You should undertake your own private study on the war. Interview people from both sides and I know that your option will change. The 'puppets' - as they have become to be knowns - have lost the war and are fleeing the country in droves. Taliban has once again taken over Afghanistan - don't you know this?

      Muhammed - 2012-05-05 18:33

      *option = opinion

      Muhammed - 2012-05-05 18:42

Did you hear of the “Operation Al-Farooq”, headed by the State of Afghanistan? Just today the US has reported lost of 4 more of its troops. Everyday they are being killed and their nerves are wrecked. Both psychologically and physically they have lost the war. Again - I plead to you to interview those who were lucky enough to 'survive' and have went back home. They will give you a true account of how huge are their losses. What a shame! They fought a war that is not theirs and they lost. The cost to innocent human life is the biggest tragedy.

      fred.fraser.12 - 2012-05-05 18:45

Unfortunately your "private study" is based in delusional bias. But carry on. Your dark intent with, its emotionally detached puppet imagery, is weak at its core. You have no idea what you're up against.

      fred.fraser.12 - 2012-05-05 18:58

“Operation Al-Farooq” was not headed by the State of Afghanistan. It is the name the Taliban has given to its Spring Offensive. So much for your informed studies.

      Anneck - 2012-05-05 19:25

Muhammed, you TART! They won the war! They went over and achieved what they set out to do: KILL OSAMA BIN LADEN! No reason for them to stay on!

      Muhammed - 2012-05-05 19:43

You guys are horribly delusional. You have lost the plot. Osama bin Laden passed away in 2001. Please go and visit Afghanistan and get first hand information.

      James - 2012-05-05 20:04

Mohammed the Paki raid was recorded live and watched in W/House room. What proof that Osama died in 2001?

      fred.fraser.12 - 2012-05-05 20:53

More "informed studies" from you Muhammed.

      Muhammed - 2012-05-05 22:10

Don't you recall the official statement from the office of the late Benazir Bhutto on the demise of Osama bin Laden? The cause for his death was renal failure of confirmed by the US navy in 2002. of course all this will be censored! Now suddenly he dies for the second time, and Obama is voted in for a second term. How appropriate is it also for his alleged letter of communication to be made public on the alleged 'anniversary' of his death. Don't you see this is all made up? Of course very few people will believe the truth because the truth stinks!!! In fact the truth will appear as a whole load of bogus. So please do believe what you need to believe. All long as you got legitimate access to PHYSICAL evidences than you MUST believe it. Remember that the media is not a form of such evidence.

      Jaba - 2012-05-05 22:46

Muhammed always loses battles of wits because he's unarmed.

      fred.fraser.12 - 2012-05-05 23:08

I do. I see it's all made up. Very few people believe made-up nonsense.

      Muhammed - 2012-05-05 23:23

@ Jaba: I don't arm myself - I don't need to. And please in future, desist from replying to my comments because I do not speak with terrorists. The last time you denied what previous to that you proclaimed and that is that you support rape and the murder of children!!! And based on that I responded by saying that you are no longer a human! It must believe what it must believe. If it believes that the US has won the war, I have no problem with that. Of course I will differ with it. You see, if it denies that its mother gave birth to it, than is it wise that I waste my time debating with it?

      fred.fraser.12 - 2012-05-05 23:41

Muhammed, it's actually inhuman to dehumanized human brings by referring to them as "it". The more self-righteous and self-important you choose to be, with dark core beliefs, the more you alienate yourself from humanity.

      Jaba - 2012-05-05 23:49

Muhammed took his imagination out for a walk and ended up being dragged around the block by it. Have you ever heard of a terrorist called Jaba? well i have heard of many terrorists called Muhammed. Why do you say that I support rape and the murder of children, that sounds more like your "peaceful" sect at work rather than my free and democratic West. Me and you are very human, however you are proof of Einstein's theory that there is no limit to human stupidity.

      Anneck - 2012-05-06 00:02

Muhammed you are such a laugh! Keep it up. :-) Who needs comic relief when we have all your comments to read! LOL!

      Muhammed - 2012-05-06 06:15

Again, guys, I impress that you guys must believe what you must believe. Certainly the fairy tales that you guys believe in is able to allow you to sleep at night. And this darkness which you speak about is brightness upon brightness for me. The same brightness of Islam that is spreading throughout the world. Its unstoppable and this is what you are afraid of. The 9/11, perpetrated by the US government, against its own people, has been a great source of an infiltration of reverts into Islam. Over a thousand people embracing Islam per day in Europe. The more people targets Islam the more others will become curious about Islam and learn about it and embrace it own they become convinced of its perfection. You think the US won the war. Think is what you think. So believe in it and good luck with that. I want you to dislike this comment - go ahead - click on DISLIKE.

      Muhammed - 2012-05-06 06:28

@ Jaba: your 'free and democratic West' may be so for you. But for the millions who live in it it is nothing but darkness. Why do you refuse to get the information first hand? The media has become your God! Ask the people on the ground - those poor American people who suffer on a daily basis because of their government using their money for illegal wars. Ask the people about the recession, joblessness, deteriorating education and health systems. And you know what - the propaganda machine is at work - it will makes fools of the poor American people - to vote for these murderous. Soon thou, the tables will turn. When the masses takes control of power and unseats their government and holds it accountable. Even than, 'people' like you will support the US government - your God.

      fred.fraser.12 - 2012-05-06 07:23

Muhammed, you believe Osama Bin Laden died in Pakistan in 2001. That's how far out from true reality you are. The rest is the usual numbers game all religions play. Actually, the most meaningful growth is away from traditional religions, towards truer spirituality, a truer connection with the Divine.

      AnthonyfromAfrica - 2012-05-06 08:24

Muhammed, Your imagination is amazing, unfortunatelly it borders on absurdity. But if it makes you happy, than stay in deamland !!!

      Anneck - 2012-05-06 10:43

Muhammed, the more of you Islamic friends blow themselves up in crowded market places, the more of your Islamic friends burn in HELL!

      Muhammed - 2012-05-06 11:57

Nothing can be more further from the truth. But, again I encourage - if this is what your heart and minds NEEDS to believe, than please do believe. And thrive in that concoction.

      Anneck - 2012-05-06 13:46

Muhammed, at least our concoctions are not from the freaking moon! What have you been smoking?

      Muhammed - 2012-05-06 15:53

@ Anneck: You the kind of gullible person that if someone tells you that the stray cat in the street gave birth to you and is your mother, you will adopt that cat as your mother disown your own mother. This is how messed up your thinking it. There's nothing more for us to say to each other. Cheers.

      AnthonyfromAfrica - 2012-05-06 16:06

Muhammed, WOW !!!! One has to be pretty f.cked up in the head, to make a comment like this!!

      Anneck - 2012-05-06 16:08

Muhammed, it's a gullible person that would listen believe the rubbish you say! If you're so stuck to your roots, why don't you go and strap some dynamite to yourself and blow yourself up in a crowded market? See for yourself where you wake up afterwards?

  • James - 2012-05-05 17:42

"Fair shot" in the US BullS, Blacks are priviledged under Aff. action. We have not lost in Afghan, but the Taliban sitting in Pakistan will be back. We should never have gone into Iraq either.

      fred.fraser.12 - 2012-05-05 18:41

It would have been far better after 9/11 to spend the time forming a broad international alliance, across cultures and religions, to take a stand against autocracy and terrorism. A golden opportunity was missed. Unfortunately the US leadership was traumatized, and followed their instinctive fight-of flight mechanism into Iraq. But the US did not kill and maim hundreds of thousands of civilians in Iraq. Al-Quaida and the Taliban did this.

      James - 2012-05-05 19:57

Sorry Fred Iam an American we killed over 100,000 innocent people in Iraq.

      James - 2012-05-05 20:08

We don't need broad Int Alliances we need to get our troops off their soil, reconsider Mid East policy and let Israel defend itself, they are capable, they just bought Nuke Subs from Germany.

      fred.fraser.12 - 2012-05-05 20:53

You're as American and informed as Muhammed.

      Jaba - 2012-05-05 22:39

James you have a black-and-white mind working on a color-coded problem. ps, ur no American

      AnthonyfromAfrica - 2012-05-06 00:32
